Haverford College invites applications to our available full time, exempt, benefit eligible Instrument Specialist position in the Department of Biology.

The instrument specialist's responsibilities will include routine maintenance, troubleshooting, minor repairs, and training students and faculty in safe usage of departmental instrumentation and equipment. Other duties include serving as liaison between the department and other service departments within and outside of the college.

Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:

Inspecting instruments weekly; Coordinating alarm response systems on instrumentation, controlled temperature spaces, and freezers; Carrying our regular preventative maintenance; Keeping detailed records of instrument serial numbers, maintenance and service contracts; Upgrading and repairing of major equipment; Maintaining and repairing other departmental equipment as needs require; Acting as a liaison between Facilities, contractors and instrument repair personnel. Developing training protocols, both written and video; and Training of faculty and students in the proper use of the instruments. Assisting in biology departmental curriculum and research programs of the faculty, as needed

Line of Report: This position reports to the Chair of the Biology Department.

Education, Training, & Experience:

1.​ Bachelor ' s degree in the sciences required

2.​ General expertise in electronics and electronic devices;

3.​ General expertise in computers and scientific software;

4.​ Willingness/ ​ eagerness to learn and continue training as appropriate;

5.​ Experience and interest in working with students;

6.​ Desire to be part of a teaching enterprise; and

7.​ The ability to assist in our departmental curriculum and research programs of the faculty, as needed. ​

  • Reaching or working above shoulder (to extend arms upward or outward away from body):Three to six hours
  • Walking (to move entire body in erect position):Three to six hours
  • Standing (to maintain body in erect posture in stationary position):Three to six hours
  • Sitting (to rest weight on buttocks and back of thighs with legs bent at knees):Three to six hours
  • Crouching/Stooping (to bend upper body forward while fully flexing knees):Up to three hours
  • Kneeling (to maintain upper body in erect position while resting knees on ground):Up to three hours
  • Climbing (to ascend or descent heights using ladders, scaffolding, stairs, poles, inclined surfaces):Up to three hours
  • Twisting (to rotate upper body while feet remain stationary):Up to three hours
  • Driving (operating a motor vehicle, crane, tractor, forklift, etc.):Never
  • Exposure Limitation (i.e., cold water, dust, gas, fumes, extreme temperatures):Three to six hours
