The Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor (Instructor) position.

Who We Are

The candidate’s teaching and service will be carried out on the Western Colorado University campus in Gunnison, Colorado as part of the Western Colorado University - University of Colorado Boulder Computer Science and Engineering Partnership program. The Western-CU Partnership program provides students with the opportunity to obtain a CU Boulder degree while remaining in residence on the Western Colorado University’s campus in Gunnison, CO. The partnership program is housed in a new $60M dollar facility with state-of-the-art labs and facilities, allowing the program to concentrate on industry-focused projects and project-based learning initiatives. With small class sizes and a state-of-the-art facility, students receive a world-class education.

The Western-CU Partnership program provides a terrific opportunity to work in a university setting and enjoy all the amenities of small town living in the mountains of central Colorado. Located in historic Gunnison, Western is minutes from fantastic mountain biking, skiing, fishing, climbing, rafting, hiking. The campus has a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor track, pool, and climbing wall. In addition to the wealth of recreational activities, the town of Gunnison maintains its historic tradition as a small ranching town and is home to local art galleries, breweries, and scenic drives. Gunnison has a great little downtown area, a busy Arts Center, a fun Recreation Center with a pool, two hockey rinks and a new public library on the way. The Gunnison School District is consistently highly rated and after school opportunities abound. We are a short drive (or free bus ride) from the resort town of Crested Butte for when you want the classic ski town experience.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

This position involves teaching five engineering courses per academic year on the Western Colorado University campus in Gunnison. This position is anticipated to start in the Fall 2022 semester, with the potential for a summer appointment for course development. Required courses to be taught include robotics, artificial intelligence, machine design, and product development. Additional course needs will arise; the candidate should be comfortable developing and teaching these new courses. The candidate will also play an active service role, which may include student club advising, assisting with ABET, program recruiting, DEI initiatives, and other service-related activities. Conducting research is not a requirement of this position, but candidates are encouraged to engage in research to stay current in their field and provide opportunities for students to engage in research.

What You Should Know

This is a non-tenure track appointment for three years and may be renewable thereafter. The successful candidate will likely be appointed as a Teaching Assistant Professor (Instructor) on the Mechanical Engineering faculty at CU Boulder, although appointment as a Teaching Associate Professor (Senior Instructor) is possible depending on experience and qualifications. The position will report to the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

We can offer a competitive salary in the range of $70,000-$80,000.

What We Require
  • Candidates must have earned at least a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a closely-related field.
  • The successful applicant would have demonstrated strong teaching ability as the instructor of record for one or more courses for at least one year, and will be able to teach both lecture and lab-based courses.
What You Will Need
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate engineering education and active engagement in the mechanical engineering field.
  • A passion for improving undergraduate engineering education through experiential learning, project-based learning, and other evidence-based practices in pedagogy is a must.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Some industrial experience is preferred.
