The SCENE SHOP SUPERVISOR is responsible for the supervision, management, and scheduling for University Theatre productions in the School of Drama scene shop. Position responsibilities include conceiving, implementing, training and enforcing safety rules in conjunction with the TECHNICAL DIRECTOR. In relation to student employees and lab students the SHOP SUPERVISOR mentors, trains, and evaluates their work. The SHOP SUPERVISOR is responsible for the shop maintenance and administrative duties associated with inventory management and purchasing. Other duties include performing work related to the fabrication of scenery and properties (carpentry, welding, metal working, plastics, painting, electrical and mechanical installations). The SCENE SHOP SUPERVISOR must adhere to and participate in the development of production as well as communicate construction progress to applicable departmental personnel on a regular basis.



Required Education: Bachelor Degree AND:

  • 18-36 months of professional theatre experience



  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions
  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics or technical manuals
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty and staff
  • Experience with power tools
  • Experience with scenic carpentry techniques
  • Welding experience
  • Ability to read and construct from draftings
  • Current knowledge of safety practices for scene shops
  • Experience supervising construction crews



  • Driver's license required for relocating large set items

  • Must be able to climb, crouch, pull, push, engage in repetitive motions, communicate, stand and see.


Departmental Preferences:

  • Graduate degree in Technical Theatre or professional equivalent.
  • Experience with automation
  • Advanced carpentry skills
  • Furniture construction
  • Rigging knowledge
  • Tool repair knowledge
