Position Summary

The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at the School of International and Public Affairs seeks a Director for its Women in Energy (WIE) program. The WIE Program Director will be responsible for overseeing the management, administration, programs, fundraising and strategic planning of the WIE program, which is aimed at increasing the number of women studying to enter energy related fields, working long term in the energy space and achieving senior leadership roles. The incumbent will lead the program’s educational programming and professional development while creating a global network for students and professional women to increase WIE’s impact and reach. The incumbent will oversee WIE activities which include student office hours, public events, workshops, and site visits to energy organizations or infrastructure. The incumbent will lead fundraising activities for the WIE program, alongside university development teams, including networking with corporate and individual donors. Expertise with regard to energy related topics covered by the Center such as oil markets, natural gas, power sector, renewable energy, and climate change, among others is essential. This role will interact with a wide array of Center stakeholders, including senior policymakers, industry executives and Columbia faculty and administration. The position reports to CGEP’s Executive Director and works closely with WIE Steering Committee Co-Chairs.

Responsibilities

Management and Strategy

  • Lead the planning, execution, and day-to-day operations of the WIE program. 
  • Represent CGEP and the WIE program externally at conferences, events, and meetings. Oversee and ensure that the Steering Committee is meaningfully participating in program strategy, organizational development, and fundraising, through regular meetings and developing additional opportunities for them to engage. 
  • Originate and pursue fundraising opportunities.
  • Connect the Steering Committee with resources and tools for their guidance, oversight, and fundraising opportunities. 
  • Follow current trends and events relevant to women and energy; connect to constituents via communication channels where applicable. 
  • Directly manage the work of Program Assistant(s) with tasks including: database management; partner outreach; meeting materials, event staffing, and related tasks. (Additional direct reports are expected in the near future as the program expands.)

Program Expansion

  • Spearhead the WIE mentorship program, including recruiting mentors, developing rosters of mentees, relevant program materials and guidelines, and tracking outcomes. 
  • Cultivate and foster new and existing WIE relationships. In coordination with CGEP’s Development staff, lead outreach to and stewardship of institutional partners. Expand the WIE professional women’s network. Oversee the development and maintenance of a database of professional women in the energy sector. Manage office hours for students and young professionals with the WIE Steering Committee, as well as CGEP scholars and senior staff. 
  • Write funding proposals and identify new foundation opportunities. Lead the outreach and marketing of WIE activities to students across Columbia and external partner institutions. Oversee the WIE website ensuring relevant content is updated regularly.  
  • Create a global program, driving outreach and expansion.
  • Identify new funding sources and organize the creation of a WIE Corporate Board in coordination with CGEP and SIPA Development staff. 
  • Recruit energy companies to participate in the WIE Externship program and expand the number of student externship positions. 
  • Lead the domestic and global expansion of the WIE program by increasing the number of partner Universities, working with the Columbia Global Centers, and launching a podcast. 
  • In coordination with CGEP staff, establish a WIE Distinguished Visiting Fellows program.

Program Operations

  • Work with projects administration and internal finance team with respect to budget creation, expenditures tracking on grants and gifts, and reporting to funders as appropriate. 
  • Curate WIE content and recruit senior participants for expert group meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops, and similar gatherings, including speaker, topic, and invitee selection; background document development; and participation tracking. 
  • Galvanize strategic planning and discussions on program design, oversight, and evaluation to support implementation and capture best practices.
  • Lead performance tracking to ensure program goals are met while addressing areas of concern.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of directly relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and minimum of 10 years of related experience desired.
  • The ideal candidate will be a collaborative manager of programs and staff, a strategic thinker and problem-solver, and an expert relationship-builder.
  • Demonstrated interest in advancing and empowering women.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of energy and women’s issues strongly preferred.
  • Previous fundraising experience is a plus.
