Description

DePauw University seeks a full-time Professor of Practice to advise the student newspaper, The DePauw , and its companion website, and to teach journalism courses for a one year term with the possibility of renewal. Established in 1852, The DePauw is Indiana’s oldest college newspaper and boasts an impressive history of producing journalists at the highest levels of the profession. DePauw University is the birthplace of the Society of Professional Journalists and is home to the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media . DePauw University offers a unique opportunity to foster the next generation of journalists in a student-centered, liberal arts setting.

The Professor of Practice in Journalism will join the professional staff of the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media and serve as editorial advisor to the student newspaper, The DePauw, including its website. The Professor of Practice will also teach courses in journalism in coordination with the English Department, the Department of Communication & Theatre, and the Media Fellows Program, and will have the opportunity to teach focused three-week Winter Term and May Term courses and run short journalism workshops during the school year. The teaching appointment in the first year is three courses, one in the fall term and two in the spring. Should the Professor of Practice be reappointed, the course load may change based on changing program needs but will not exceed 2/2. The successful candidate will provide leadership, advising, and training for student managers, journalists, writers, designers, photographers, and sales staff at The DePauw, moving them in particular to a digital, multimedia model. This position will also maintain operational oversight to assure that budgets, deadlines, production goals, and regulatory/legal issues are properly understood and addressed by students. The Professor of Practice will be expected to provide regular and timely written feedback on all student output for the newspaper, participate in storyboard meetings and critiques, and coordinate with other student media advisors in television and radio to develop cross-platform initiatives. As part of the duties, this position will participate in regular meetings of the DePauw University Board of Student Publications and also coordinate with the Director of the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media to arrange visiting professional counselors, journalism internships, awards, and scholarships. The duties of this position intersect with and are supported by the staff of the Pulliam Center. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive newsroom and engage in university-wide outreach initiatives to that end. The Professor of Practice will also contribute, in coordination with the Director of the Pulliam Center, to a reframing of journalism at DePauw, to align with the five-year Bold and Gold Strategic Plan . Finally, the person filling this position will be expected to maintain a regular and visible presence at the newspaper offices during the school year.
