Hagerstown Community College, located in western Maryland, is pleased to announce that applications are currently being accepted for an Upward Bound Academic Advisor and Assessment Specialist position.

 

SUMMARY STATEMENT

The Academic Advisor and Assessment Specialist serves as both an academic advisor and case manager for the TRIO UB students, meeting with Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) staff to discuss students’ academic and social progress. He or she will also assist with curriculum development and UB class scheduling for the summer UB component. He or she will serve along with the manager as a liaison between HCC and WCPS.


Please note, this is a grant-funded position.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
A. The UB Advising and Assessment Specialist will:

1. Travel to UB target high schools on a monthly basis to develop and monitor Educational Development Meetings with all UB participants. This will involve relationship building, goal setting, academic planning, advising, assessing student needs and mentoring.

2. Maintain and record student and parent correspondence via email, social media, bi-annual newsletters, UB website, etc.

3. Assist with recruiting and selecting students, summer academy instructors, and UB coach positions, as needed.

4. Assist in scheduling summer UB classes for all student levels.

5. Ensure that each UB participant student file is accurately kept to Department of Education standards and, along with Manager and HCC’s research team, ensure that the Annual Performance Report is completed accurately.

6. Assist in coordinating and supervising project enrichment activities, such as the UB parent meetings, academic skills workshops, college visits, and field trips.

7. Assist the Project Manager in administering the application process and intake assessments for UB students.

8. Provide and/or coordinate with the Student Financial Aid Office on information to project students and/or their parents for financial aid process, including grants, scholarships, and loans.

9. Refer UB students to other programs at WCPS or HCC or to social services agencies for provision of services such as extensive psychiatric counseling, housing, and other services.

10. Ensure all participant information is recorded accurately in Datatel system, as well as the Blumen database.

 


B. Other duties as assigned, in compliance with the UB grant. This position will often require work on Saturdays and evening hours, with summer work being particularly intense.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in psychology, counseling/social work, educational leadership, or a similar field required; secondary teacher certification preferred. Minimum two years related work experience to include teaching and program development for high school students, including behavioral health. Familiarity with the pre-college experience preferred. Experience overcoming barriers similar to UB students preferred, such as having previously been a low-income or a first-generation student.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills to guide students in their academic decision-making; excellent organizational and planning skills; experience and skill in mentoring, tutoring, or counseling; proficiency in computer applications such as Word and Excel; ability to work independently and accurately under pressure, and make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures; database system skills.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Normal office environment has both scheduled and walk-in appointments. Several evening and weekend duties are required. This position will require frequent travel to participating UB high schools to ensure that project activities are top-quality. Summer work will be particularly intense.
