Adjunct Journalist in Residence

The Communication Program at Lasell University in Newton MA seeks a part time Journalist in Residence to join our faculty in teaching the next generation of multimedia journalists in a rapidly changing media environment. Start date Fall 2022.

We seek a candidate who is passionate about teaching, dedicated to student advising and mentoring, and committed to the ongoing relevance of journalism in all its evolving forms as fundamental to democracy.

We are specifically looking for faculty who appreciate the value diverse students bring to a campus community and are eager to help foster an inclusive and equitable campus environment. Faculty mentors who represent the increasing diversity of our student body are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will serve as Advisor to the student print and digital newspaper, The 1851 Chronicle, and will teach one undergraduate Journalism course per term ranging from foundational news writing and reporting, to feature, investigative and multimedia journalism.

The 1851 Chronicle Advisor is responsible for overseeing students in the planning, creating, delivering, and promoting of the 1851 Chronicle monthly print publication and digital and social media channels, mentoring and training students, and overseeing the administration of the news organization.

Successful candidates will demonstrate an avid interest in teaching writing, research, interviewing and reporting across platforms and genres utilizing a project-focused approach.

The Communication program is always seeking to enhance and diversify offerings and seeks a candidate who will work both within and beyond the program to shape the curriculum in response to industry developments and new potential markets.

  • At least five years of experience in professional journalism
  • A Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication or related field
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population of students
  • Demonstrated success or potential to teach journalism courses at the undergraduate level
  • Experience working with online platforms and multimedia reporting
  • Experience as a college media advisor or the lead reporter or editor on one or more significant journalism projects

  • Advanced degree in journalism or a related field, or comparable professional experience (10+ years)
  • News management experience
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and digital journalism tools and storytelling strategies (video, audio and/or multimedia)
  • Knowledge of operating, marketing plans and training programs for news staff
