Department Summary
The Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratories (ESBL) and Institute for Health in the Built Environment (IHBE) seek to expand their interdisciplinary team that spans expertise in architectural design, building performance, energy efficiency, building science and engineering, building acoustics, indoor microbiology, and indoor air quality. ESBL and IHBE collaborate within the University of Oregon College of Design and School of Architecture and Environment. In 2018, ESBL, the Biology and Built Environment Center and the Baker Lighting Laboratory launched the Institute for Health in the Built Environment, a collaboration with multiple academic institutions, centers, and labs in collaboration with private industry, philanthropic organizations, and government agencies to reduce energy consumption of buildings and improve the health and well-being of building inhabitants.

Position Summary
IHBE and ESBL invite applications for a Post-doctoral Scholar in Building Science, with an emphasis on energy and indoor air quality. The selected candidate will help to lead research at the interface of energy efficiency and healthy buildings, with an emphasis on indoor air quality. The position is responsible for conducting laboratory experiments and analysis, including but not limited to optimization and analyzing control strategies and energy management, troubleshooting existing building performance, supporting original energy-efficient architectural design for new construction that also manages indoor environmental quality, and advancing automation in the operations of existing buildings. A substantial portion of the job will include working with on- and off-campus constituencies to devise increasingly automated and integrated strategies to simultaneously improve existing building performance for the purpose of reducing energy consumption and maximizing human health and comfort indoors. Position duties/work will incorporate elements of mechanical and electrical engineering for buildings, aerosol science, quantitative microbial risk assessment, computer science, and architectural design. The position will be involved in proposal writing and there may be opportunities to be a co-investigator on proposals.

The position will be responsible to conduct independent research that supports the mission of ESBL and IHBE. Independent research is expected to be 50% or more of the position's effort, and the remainder will be project execution and oversight. Existing projects pertain to energy efficiency, building automation, healthy building design and operations, indoor air quality, and measuring and mitigating factors related to indoor infectious disease transmission.
Minimum Requirements
  • A doctoral degree in architecture/engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience with concepts, analytical techniques, and measurement equipment of building systems and architectural design.
  • Experience with building science data analytics and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with aerosol science and building HVAC system design, control, and equipment.
  • Experience working as part of a group or team, in a team atmosphere.
    Professional Competencies
  • Experience with software troubleshooting.
  • Effective communication skills; attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, project management, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated overall commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with quantitative microbial risk assessment platforms.
  • Familiarity with energy simulation and airflow simulation software.
  • Experience with 3-D modeling software such as Revit, Rhinoceros, and SketchUp.
  • Experience with Adobe creative suite.
  • Familiarity w/ HVAC system commissioning.
  • Experience with Excel, Matlab, R, or other programs to automate data handling.
