Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Director, the Materials & Images Librarian oversees aspects of research, teaching, and learning services in the Fisher Fine Arts Library's Materials Library & Image Collection. Responsibilities include development and implementation of library programs, services, and collections, all in service to the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, the Department of the History of Art, the Penn Museum, and interdisciplinary entities on campus.

This is a two-year position with potential for renewal.

This position is tasked with ongoing evaluation and improvement of existing access and research services in Fisher for the Materials Library, Image Collection, and 3D scanning program, and in collaboration with peers in other areas of the Libraries. This position is active in outreach, liaising with faculty and curators, and developing programs for students and visiting scholars related to materials and image research. The position participates in Libraries-wide task forces and committees as well as appropriate professional associations. In conjunction with the Director, this position provides leadership for materials and image collection analysis, and troubleshooting of related cataloging and discovery systems. The position supervises the Materials and Images team, two full-time bargaining unit staff covering areas of materials and image acquisition, cataloging, and research. The position also supervises the 3D scanning program, a service that provides 3D scanning technology and modeling access on campus, primarily to patrons in the Weitzman School and the Penn Museum. The librarian and materials/images team are part of the larger structure of Fisher reporting to the Director, including the Assistant Director, Access Services team, the Common Press, and the internship program. The position will have other duties as assigned.

Housed in an iconic building designed by famed Philadelphia architect Frank Furness and opened as the university's central library in 1891, the Fisher Fine Arts Library sits in the center of Penn's campus. The library's specific collecting areas include architecture, city and regional planning, historic preservation, the history of art, landscape architecture, and fine arts. The Materials Library and Image Collection, resources within Fisher, support materials and images research as well as 3D scanning and related modeling needs across campus. The Fisher Fine Arts Library is part of the Penn Libraries, which is embarking on an innovative strategic plan that will chart the library's future with an impact on the global society.

Job Description

This is a two-year position with potential for renewal.




  • Establish, document, and manage workflows and best practices for materials, image, historic plaster cast, and 3D scanning project areas
  • Supervise 2 bargaining unit staff members responsible for acquiring, cataloging, and imaging the materials and image collections
  • Develop and execute materials library collecting strategy and policy
  • Engage with peer institutions as part of a network of materials libraries, including participation in materials consortia
  • Investigate loan model for materials
  • Investigate discoverability and user experience of materials database
  • Supervise 3D scanning program operations and collaborate with other 3D services on campus
  • Provide access to materials library and 3D scanning services evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Participate in print and digital collection development related to materials research
  • Manage Artstor/JSTOR Forum instances, and engage with vendors and peer institutions on best practices for those tools
  • Develop project to digitize historic plaster casts collections
  • Align Fisher image collections with best practices for digital preservation
  • Coordinate with director and assistant director to develop instruction, outreach, and programming initiatives for the materials and image collections
  • Engage with faculty in developing instruction opportunities related to materials and images
  • Represent the Libraries in professional organizations related to materials and image collections
  • Collaborate with other units on campus, in the Philadelphia area, and beyond, interested in materials and image research
  • Promote materials and digital image collections
  • Manage web and social media presence of the Materials Library


Required Qualifications:



  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library science or equivalent combination of education and professional experience, plus a background in an arts or design discipline
  • 2-3 years of professional academic library experience, preferably in a supervisory capacity
  • 1-3 years of research and instruction experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience working with special collections
  • Demonstrated experience with technology and digital scholarship
  • Proficiency with new technology in an educational or library setting
  • Experience in event programming and/or project management
  • Proficiency in one or more non-English languages
