Competition No. - A107546938
Closing Date - Will remain open until filled.

The University of Alberta has committed to diversifying the institution's professoriate through an inclusive excellence initiative that includes hiring up to eleven Black scholars across a range of disciplines and faculties.

This cohort hire is designed to make an immediate and substantive contribution to advancing Black academic excellence at the University of Alberta. A commitment to recruiting and retaining an increasingly diverse group of excellent scholars is essential to addressing the cumulative impacts of biases and inequalities that have stood in the way of inclusive excellence. This is part of the University of Alberta's ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity.

The scholars hired through this Black academic excellence cohort hire will be welcomed into academic Departments and Faculties committed to inclusivity and academic excellence and welcomed into a growing community of Black faculty members across the university.

For this cohort hire, the University of Alberta seeks qualified individuals who self-identify as persons of Black African or Black Caribbean descent and lived experience.

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a tenure-track position in Black Studies in Education at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies.

We seek to hire a scholar with a program of research in Black experiences of education (understood to include formal, non-formal, informal, social movement sites of education) and its ideologies, policies, politics, and practices in Canada.
• The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in disciplines such as (or a combination thereof) education, sociology, history, anthropology, cultural studies, gender studies, ethnic studies and other related disciplines.
• We are looking for a candidate with demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinarity and with research and teaching interests pertaining to Black diaspora communities and community service in any of the following areas of education: Anti-Racist Education, Social Justice Education, International Studies in Education, Anti-Oppression Education, Critical Pedagogy, and/or Anti-Colonial, Decolonial, Postcolonial Education. Experience as a Black feminist scholar with a program of research that is attentive to the place-based, global, and historical challenges of decolonization in education and schooling will be considered an asset.

The candidate will make outstanding contributions to the diversification of their scholarly fields and /or institutions of higher education. They will be expected to teach a 2-2 course load and contribute to other aspects of teaching, service, and administration within the specialization of Social Justice and International Studies in Education and the Faculty of Education. They will be joining a professional Faculty that serves teacher candidates at the undergraduate level with a strong commitment to public education. The candidate will also be serving in a Faculty that draws graduate students from a wide variety of fields—K-12 education systems, government, higher education, non-profit sector, community organizations and social movements.
