Friends Seminary, an independent Quaker school educating students in grades K-12 in New York City since 1786 seeks a Director of the Center for Peace, Equity and Justice (CPEJ) to begin August 2022.    The Director of CPEJ is responsible for determining the strategy and direction of the center's four coordinated programs of Diversity, Equity and Belonging (in collaboration with the Director of Diversity, Equity and Belonging (DEB)); Service Learning and Civic Engagement; Global Education; and Quaker life, leading a team of two associates responsible for the implementation of these programs. The Director has primary accountability for CPEJ’s activities and reports to the Head of School.   At Friends Seminary, CPEJ is the home for the School’s values based programs and activities. The staff of CPEJ are a team of diversity, equity and belonging practitioners, committed to teaching that empowers students to take action on issues in their community. The Director of CPEJ oversees the Center and its staff in working collaboratively at the intersection of these distinctive programs. The Director is a member of the School’s department heads group and serves in a strategic role within the School’s administration, as a lead educator in CPEJ.   Qualifications include
  • Master’s degree, with concentration in Peace Studies, Human Rights and Social Justice Studies and/or Global Studies; Gender Studies; Queer Studies; Africana Studies or another subject that directly relates to the work of CPEJ
Essential experience
  • Knowledge of current global issues and appreciation of cultural diversity
  • Awareness of current trends and literature regarding DEB work particularly in independent schools 
  • Experience managing in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience developing, implementing and managing short-term travel programs
  • Experience in risk management assessment in both service and travel planning
  • Experience in student organizing
