Building. Support. Teamwork.

The Institute of Government is hiring for a Database Administrator. Applications will only be considered by applying through the UGA link listed below.

The Database Administrator will see a project from designing a database through building it, and into implementation. This person should be able to work independently and in a team environment to implement database-driven solutions for data collection, data management workflow, and data reporting. Through the process, they will provide support in addition to design, development, and operational database services. They should be aware of institutional and technological opportunities while also knowing how to solve challenges in database development. They should be able to make recommendations about database-driven projects to managers and IT operations teams.

The successful candidate should be self-motivated with an attention to detail. They should be able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are needed. Prior experience on a research team is a must.

Specific tasks include working with project and institutional leaders to understand project goals and needs; coordinating, designing, creating, and maintaining databases for current and future projects; assessing data reporting needs; coordinating and designing data reporting to meet project needs; and anticipating, tracking and resolving database-related requests and problems. Other tasks include building and verifying project datasets via data loading, cleansing, verification, and migration tasks; focusing on automation using the Extract, Transformation and Load (ETL) routines needed to collect and reconcile data from disparate sources and transfer data to other applications; and researching and learning newly available tools and techniques.

We’re looking for someone who has skills in the following: SQL Server 2016, database administration, database tuning, database query tools, database management, database security, RDBMS, and a knowledge of reporting and query tools and practices. These SQL-based reports should be appropriate for use in written reports, dashboard interfaces, data visualization tools, and other custom applications. While knowing the technical lingo is required, it is also necessary to be able to explain the technical lingo in a way that others can understand and feel reassured that the database is functioning properly and has the right level of security.

The Database Administrator will assimilate into database designs an applied understanding of standards and practices across multiple domains into existing database designs. The successful candidate will have a passion for service and the projects they are assigned. It is important for this person to be committed to projects and solving problems.
