Woodbury University invites applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor Design Computation Specialist to lead the new Bachelor of Science in Design Computation. Preference will be given to candidates with administrative experience. Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with teaching experience, professional background, and the degrees held. Contract renewal and rank advancement at Woodbury are contingent upon satisfying departmental and university criteria, which include effective teaching, meaningful engagement through creative work, scholarship, and service to the University. The position begins in August 2022. Woodbury University is a non-tenure granting institution.

Design Computation is a four-year undergraduate degree that focuses on the theory and practice of computation as it applies to the design and architecture professions.  This new program is currently under development and it will be the work of the successful candidate to initiate the program and develop key overlaps with existing programs in the School of Architecture.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a candidate with expertise in the domains of computational design, media, and architecture.  The candidate should incorporate computation and technology in both professional and academic work. Teaching responsibilities include programming and computation as it relates to media and building technology. Specific courses may include Introductory to advanced level programming, robotics, machine learning, augmented reality and virtual reality, and/or other subjects specific to the candidate’s expertise.

Preference will be given to candidates with administrative experience, including curriculum development and oversight, budget management, facilities coordination, course scheduling, and student recruitment. Candidates should have experience in–or the potential for–building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service

Administrative tasks may include syllabus development, evaluation of hardware and software purchases, oversight of lab equipment, archiving of student work, end-of-year showcase production, student advising, hiring of faculty, maintaining accreditation standards, program assessment, alumni relations, and community outreach.

 

Requirements

  • Applicants should demonstrate an active career in emerging media-related fields and/or design computation. A Terminal degree (e.g., M.Arch, MSArch) is preferred and required for rank advancement.
  • Experience teaching at an accredited college or university.
  • The ideal candidate will have produced a body of work that reflects deep expertise and proficiency in multiple programming languages and development platforms, accompanied by a strong visual portfolio.
  • Proficiency and familiarity with several programming languages and platforms such as: JavaScript, Python, C/C++, Unity, Unreal, TouchDesigner, Maya, Rhino, Grasshopper,  Cinema 4D and Adobe Creative Suite.

This position qualifies for University sponsored employee benefit plans and programs (e.g., group health insurance, life insurance, sick, and paid holidays), subject to the eligibility requirements and conditions of each plan and program. Department chairs receive an additional stipend and course release.
