Summary:

The Student-Athlete Coach and Tutor Coordinator counsels and guides VCU's student-athletes to help them achieve educational success. This position optimizes the academic experience of student-athletes throughout their entire educational career at VCU through a combination of teaching, tutoring, and individualized academic coaching.

Typical Duties
  • Teach a minimum of one section in the fall and one in the spring of UNIV 1XX or 2XX courses;
  • Create and teach monthly study skills seminar series;
  • Collaborate with other academic coaches on campus to provide academic support programming;
  • Meet individually with student-athletes to help them develop learning strategies, goal setting and time management skills;
  • Provide tutoring services when appropriate;
  • Maintain accurate and detailed written documentation for each student-athlete during their course of stay at VCU, as required by the NCAA;
  • Inform and train tutors on NCAA and VCU Honor Code guidelines through mandatory monthly training sessions;
  • Conduct ongoing needs assessments to identify areas and courses in which tutoring should be offered;
  • Continue to develop plans for improving individual and group tutoring programs;
  • Hire, train, and supervise a qualified pool of undergraduate and graduate tutors;
  • Utilize the tracking system to monitor usage of tutorial services and make adjustments in services according to demand;
  • Monitor tutoring and computer use in the lab, which includes ongoing documentation of these activities;
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the tutoring program through the implementation of an assessment plan and provide end of the semester data reports to the supervisor;
  • Maintain national certifications for the tutorial program;
  • Supervise and create drop-in tutoring sessions; and
  • Handle other relevant academic and administrative duties, as assigned. Some work assignments and/or event participation will require weekend and/or evening hours.
Typical Education and Experience
  • An advanced degree or education and relevant work experience equating to an advanced degree;
  • Experience working with student-athletes at a large, diverse, urban, NCAA Division l university;
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations;
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate student-athletes toward academic achievement;
  • Tutoring experience in a culturally diverse university environment with student-athletes of varying academic ability level;
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills;
  • Must be available to work some evening and/or weekend hours, as needed; and
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Hiring Standards:
  • A Master's degree in social work, counseling, higher education administration, sport leadership, humanities, or a related field;
  • Personal student-athlete collegiate experience;
  • Experience working in a University learning center or other related support activity; and
  • Experience teaching or leading workshops.
