Commonwealth School seeks a full-time physics teacher for grades 9–12, beginning in the fall of 2022.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
-
Teach four classes (about 40 students
total) as a member of the science department: typically two or
three sections of first-year physics courses, which are either
algebra-based introductions to classical physics or calculus-based
Newtonian mechanics, and one section of second-year physics, which
is calculus-based in electricity and magnetism
Depending on enrollments, possibly
teach one math class or an elective in a subject of interest to the
teacher, such as relativity, cosmology, or wave physics
Manage Commonwealth's physics lab,
which houses educational and research-grade equipment, including a
Class 3B laser and electronics supplies, and envision its optimal
use for supporting student inquiry
Serve as an advisor, providing
academic guidance and mentoring to a small number of students as
their primary point of contact and liaison with their families
Assume one or more administrative
roles, such as mentoring student projects, advising clubs, and
overseeing programs such as student lunch clean-up
Fulfill duties beyond the classroom
that are shared among the faculty and staff. This might include
welcoming prospective students at admissions events, chaperoning
dances, or helping make our beloved twice-yearly all-school trips a
fun-filled success
The annual (ten-month school year) salary range for this position is based on relevant experience (sample ranges: $57,000–$68,000 for up to 9 years experience and $70,000–$88,000 for 10–19 years experience). A generous benefits package includes health and dental insurance and retirement contributions. In addition, the school encourages and supports professional development, including through summer grants for curriculum development and personal enrichment and funding for workshops and other programs.
We offer personalized and sustained onboarding during the first year, including weekly meetings with the Assistant Head of School and the Dean of Faculty Hiring and Support and close work with a peer mentor.

We work closely and collaboratively with each other in our cozy space, and we make extensive use of Boston’s many resources.
Our mission is to educate young people from diverse backgrounds to become knowledgeable, thoughtful, and creative adults, capable of careful analysis, fruitful cooperation, and responsible leadership. In keeping with our mission, our teachers challenge and support students as they develop the skills that will encourage their lifelong love of learning.
Our teachers design curriculum, reflect on their practice, create partnerships within their departments, and support student learning both in the classroom and in one-on-one tutorials. Faculty and staff value trust and respect, shared stewardship, autonomy, accountability, creativity, and enjoyment (see our fully articulated norms here).
