Boston Conservatory at Berklee invites applications for the position of Chair of the Instrumental Studies Department

The Assistant Chair provides leadership in the practical implementation of artistic and educational goals of the department and division, with a focus on ensemble operations and augmented curricular offerings (e.g. guest artists, special presentations and events, etc.) .  The Assistant Chair reports to the Dean in support of the Chair, and works closely with division faculty, staff, and the Berklee academic and artistic community.

The ideal candidate for this position will be an outstanding musician with performance experience at a high level, an experienced educator, and effective administrator, with a background of successful employment in a collegiate setting. Thorough knowledge of instrumental repertoire and the great variety of performance settings, including large ensembles, chamber, and solo repertoire, and national recognition as a musician are essential. A Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience is required.

Situated within the Music Division, the Instrumental Studies Department at Boston Conservatory at Berklee includes 31 unique performance-focused programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels for all standard orchestral instruments, as well as collaborative piano and conducting. The department comprises 16 full-time and 37 part-time faculty, providing instruction to over 250 Boston Conservatory at Berklee students.

Responsibilities include


  • Support the implementation of a visionary instrumental music program
  • Assist the Chair in overseeing the daily needs and functions of the departments 31 programs of study in music performance
  • Manage the daily operations and logistics of the Conservatory’s large ensemble program, including ensemble casting, scheduling, student attendance, and student performance experience
  • Communicate information to faculty, staff, and students regarding departmental and divisional events, and curriculum updates.
  • Build and maintain a professional work environment that is respectful, inclusive, and supportive of the needs of all involved
  • Contribute to the planning of the artistic season and performance opportunities
  • In partnership with the Chair and Faculty committee, oversee the planning and execution of the BCB Artistry in Action Series
 Academic Administration

  • Participate in curriculum development, review and assessment
  • Assist the Chair in class scheduling, assigning classrooms and teaching studios
  • Work closely with faculty on syllabus development and maintain a catalog of all department syllabi
  • Participate in faculty hiring processes and orientation
  • Ensure adherence to union rules and policies
  • Oversee academic advising, working in partnership with faculty advisors and chair
  • Assist students and academic advisors with questions regarding registration
  • Participate in recruitment and admissions events, including auditions, open houses, and other activities, in consultation with the Chair, Dean, Faculty, and Admissions Team
  • Work with faculty to advance curriculum with regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Oversee department accompaniment program, including communications with all staff accompanists and faculty collaborators, budgeting, recruitment, and hiring of accompanying staff
 Teaching and Performance

  • Maintain a nationally recognized reputation as an outstanding performer and teacher
  • Actively participate as a performing artist within the department and at the institution
  • Support the teaching activities of the Conservatory faculty, and when appropriate and required, teach up to one class per academic year within the candidate’s expertise.
