The University of North Carolina Asheville is seeking an energetic, innovative thought leader who will provide strategic and visionary leadership as a co- architect of the enriched and modernized student experience in partnership with Academic Affairs. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs will strategically and operationally grow the division into the future, developing a rich, student-centered learning and leadership experience grounded in the University's unique public liberal arts and sciences mission. The VCSA, who reports directly to the Chancellor, serves as a member of the Chancellor's Senior Staff, will be a strong advocate for students and will be deeply engaged in all aspects of divisional and institution- wide collaboration to advance the mission and objectives of the University. Of primary importance are seasoned and wise leadership skills and a keen understanding of today's undergraduates in ways that foster an inclusive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive and graduate. Toward this end, the key priority abilities for this position include:

  • Participate within the Chancellor's Senior Staff as a strong, knowledgeable, and collaborative leader who is prepared to advocate for the interests of the students and the Division of Student Affairs while also being an active contributor to discussions and collaborations with institution-wide priorities. As the institution embarks on a bold new vision with new leadership and enhanced state support, the University is seeking an experienced senior leader with the management skills, knowledge, experience, and energy capable of elevating the Division of Student Affairs to new strategically, integrated importance university-wide while serving the needs of present and future students.

  • Apply strategic planning, assessment, and communication skills to the achievement of divisional goals. The incoming VCSA is expected to provide vision to the leadership of all Student Affairs functions. This includes the skills to plan strategically, to use appropriate assessment methods, to establish an ethos of student-centered, data driven decision- making and to organize the Division to make the best use of the staff and resources available. The successful candidate will be an innovative and creative change agent who can start from day one to move the Division to new levels of excellence and campus impact.

  • Enhance strategic partnerships with faculty and Provost's office to promote student success. The new VCSA must possess the collaborative skills, credibility, and knowledge to build connections between faculty and student affairs professionals to maximize the potential for all students at UNCA to engage and thrive. The VCSA will be expected to work closely with the Chancellor and Provost to strengthen the ties between the curricular and co- curricular areas of the University. With the ultimate focus on maximizing student success, there are multiple opportunities and new resources to enhance the student experience inside and outside of the classroom. Demonstrated experience of successful collaborations with academic affairs, particularly as it relates to enhancing measures of student success and retention, is essential.

  • Lead efforts to invigorate a sense of university- wide community belonging and engagement for students. The VCSA should model active engagement with students through transparent and authentic communications both in person and through various relationships with faculty and staff colleagues across campus. The VCSA should be accessible to students and be an active participant in their organizations and programs when appropriate. The VCSA will lead efforts to enhance the co-curricular program offerings, establish meaningful campus traditions, promote support for the Division I athletic program and collaborate with off-campus partners to further engage students with Asheville and the region.

  • Strengthen a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to create a sense of belonging for all students. The new Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs will have a comprehensive working knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) frameworks and demonstrated experience in implementing campus-based initiatives. A main focus will be partnering with others in the campus community, including the faculty, other departments, relevant student organizations and the Senior Staff, to make meaningful and measurable progress toward a campus culture of inclusion and belonging.

  • Provide vision, innovation, and advocacy to strengthen the support of the professional staff of the Division of Student Affairs. The new Vice Chancellor will have exemplary management skills that harness potential, build trust, set high expectations and boost morale. The VCSA will provide the guidance, professional development, mentoring and support to all in their pursuit of effectively serving the needs of today's students. The VCSA will also strive to recruit, attract, and retain talented individuals to join the Student Affairs team.
