Description
The Humanities Division at the University of Chicago, in collaboration with the Institut Ramon Llull, is accepting applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Assistant Instructional Professor position in Catalan and Spanish expected to start on September 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. The initial appointment is for two years, and is renewable up to two additional years upon successful review. The Assistant Instructional Professor will be assigned to the Catalan and Spanish language programs in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Responsibilities will include teaching 7 language courses per year (distributed in three quarters), of which at least 3 will be in Catalan. The position also includes service related to the Catalan and Spanish language programs, such as co-curricular activities and outreach. All Instructional Professors are expected to engage in regular professional development.
The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.
Position is contingent upon budgetary approval.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements include an advanced degree (llicenciatura, grau, MA, or PhD), preferably in a field related to Catalan Studies, and academic proficiency (ACTFL Superior or equivalent) in Catalan, English, and Spanish. Previous teaching experience at the college level and/or specialized training in second language teaching or acquisition is also highly desirable. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their language proficiency via certification or in the interview process.

- a teaching statement (in English and Spanish),
- a unit plan for an elementary-level/A2 (CEFRL) Catalan course written (max. 10 pages total, written in Catalan), and a summary of its learning objectives, contents and list of activities (written in Spanish or English),
- a 15-20 minute teaching video of a remote or in-person language class (if no recording of the candidate's teaching is available, a mock-class ideo is also acceptable),
- contact information for three references.
