Chair, Department of Family Medicine

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

The University of California, Los Angeles invites applicants and nominations for a nationally recognized academic leader to join the faculty of the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and the Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine, and to the President and CEO of the UCLA Health System via Executive Medical Director (DGSOM), the Chair works collaboratively with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to establish and execute the strategic vision of the Department of Family Medicine within the greater medical enterprise. The Chair is responsible for advancing the Department’s mission of excellence in clinical care, education, research, and community engagement through the development of educational programs, research and innovation, leadership and oversight of clinical care delivery, financial management, staffing, performance improvement, faculty recruitment, and the strengthening of community partnerships. In addition, the Chair cultivates a collegial, inclusive, collaborative, and multidisciplinary culture consistent with the principles of the DGSOM’s Cultural North Star, providing mentorship to faculty members, while also upholding UCLA Health’s patient-experience model, CICARE, and promoting clinical quality, safety, and operational distinction.

The UCLA Department of Family Medicine has a commitment to providing high-quality care to under-resourced communities through clinical care, public health partnerships with the Los Angeles County Health Agency, research, and professional education. The Department’s programs are an essential element of UCLA’s progress in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. Health equity for all is part of the Department’s social contract and mission.

With a research portfolio of over $6 million, ranked in the top ten family medicine departments in NIH funding, the UCLA Department of Family Medicine has a distinguished cadre of more than 32 faculty members and 153 voluntary and affiliate faculty. The Department operates a dedicated research facility focused on vulnerable populations, located in an area of Los Angeles accessible to this community.

The UCLA Department of Family Medicine comprises several divisions and units emphasizing primary care, addiction medicine, behavioral and psychological medicine, pain medicine, palliative care, and sports medicine. The Department operates two teaching clinics: UCLA Family Health Center and Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center, which is a Los Angeles County safety net clinic, as well as a Homeless Healthcare Collaborative. In addition to its critical role in the care of underserved populations in Los Angeles, a nationally recognized sports medicine team of physicians has forged strong partnerships with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Sparks, and UCLA Athletics, while also delivering outstanding sports medicine services to local athletes of all ages.

Located on the campus of an internationally renowned research university with a $1 billion research portfolio, and within one of the most diverse cities in the country, the UCLA Department of Family Medicine is uniquely poised for transformational cross-disciplinary innovations, research and impact on community health and well-being.

The ideal candidate is a nationally recognized family medicine physician with an outstanding record of accomplishments in clinical care, research, education, and service and an aptitude for collaboration and leadership in a complex environment. The successful candidate will combine an exceptional clinical acumen with superb communication skills and emotional intelligence, an inspiring strategic vision, a dedication to mentorship, development of clinician scientists, and a deep commitment to fostering an equitable environment that is inclusive, humanistic, and respects all facets of diversity. All candidates must hold an MD or equivalent, appropriate academic credentials for a tenured faculty appointment, be board eligible, and eligible for licensure in California.

Confidential inquiries, nominations, or submissions of interest (curriculum vitae and informative personal statement, as well as a statement regarding contributions to equity, diversity and inclusion) are invited and will be considered until an appointment is made:
