ABOUT THE POSITION:

As a member of the Student Affairs team, the Director of Diversity & Academic Resources will be involved with and oversee the law school's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and provide academic and general support to assist diverse students in the transition to law school and to improve students' academic performance in law school.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Collaboration and Coordination (60% of the time)
  • Collaborate with law and institutional offices on issues involving supporting and improving equity and inclusion at the law school for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develop and provide trainings focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion for law students, faculty, and staff.
  • Collaborate with the institutional Equity & Inclusion Office, the Law School Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and the Law School Associate Dean of Faculty, when appropriate, on the bias incident reporting system, including specific reports of bias incidents.
  • Coordinate with affinity student organizations, serving as staff liaison to each group, and the Student Bar Association’s (SBA) Law Student Diversity Action Committee (LSDAC).
  • Serve on the Law School’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee, as the Law School representative on the Oregon State Bar Diversity Equity & Inclusion Committee, the Lewis & Clark Equity & Inclusion Committee, and with affinity bar sections/organizations. On the Law School’s DEI Committee, oversee the annual Campus Climate Survey in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research.
  • Attend and participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion events and presentations on-campus and in the legal community.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Faculty and the Law School Curriculum Committee on curricular matters as they relate to diversity, equity and inclusion curricular matters.
  • Collaborate with the Law School Development Office regarding scholarships for diverse students.
Preparation & Support (20% of the time)
  • With the Student Affairs team, plan and execute the Academic Enhancement Program, including planning and presenting the pre-law school Summer Institute (a 1L prequel to law school specifically designed for students from diverse and marginalized backgrounds), Skill-building 1L Sessions, centering sessions, and outlining and exam skills workshops.
  • Oversee the Student Success Fellows/Academic Support Program, including supervising two student directors and up to 16 Student Success Fellows.
Student Advising (20% of the time)
  • Counsel students on study techniques, crisis management, professionalism, and curriculum planning.
  • Meet individually with students regarding study skills and exam preparation.
  • Assist students with preparing individual study strategies and plans.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and a record of academic and extracurricular success in law school
  • State bar membership
  • Three years of law practice experience or in student support
  • Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • The ability to think imaginatively and critically about techniques to improve law students' academic development, and to design, implement, and manage innovative programs to promote that development
  • The ability to handle confidential information and exhibit good judgment in working with students, faculty, and staff
  • The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and administrators
  • The ability to juggle multiple competing priorities and meet firm deadlines
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Oregon State Bar membership
  • Five or more years of law practice experience or in student support
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups, including ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and people with disabilities
  • Work or volunteer experience with communities underrepresented in the legal profession
  • Knowledge of education theory and learning styles

Eligibility to Work

In order to comply with US Homeland Security Department regulations, all employees must complete an I-9 form in Workday prior to or no later than the first day of work and bring originals (no photocopies) of their supporting documentation to Human Resources no later than the 3rd business day of employment. Failure to have a completed I-9 form on file with the College will result in immediate termination of employment.
