The Indiana University School of Public Health‐Bloomington (SPH‐B) invites applications for the position of Department Chair and Tenured/Tenure Track Professor of Kinesiology. SPH-B welcomes applicants currently holding a tenured associate professorship or full professorship with demonstrable expertise in kinesiology or closely related field. The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized public health scholar with a record of extramurally supported research as a corresponding principal investigator, potential for collaborative leadership and administration, and a clear commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. SPH-B seeks an accomplished, dynamic, energetic, visionary leader who fosters innovation, collaboration, and camaraderie in a highly diverse community of scholars.

POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department Chair provides inspirational and practical leadership for the department’s research, teaching, and service mission. The chair is responsible for leading this historic department including: ongoing reviews of current curriculum and programs; potential development of new programs; advancing expansion of the research profile of the department in scope and extramural funding; recruiting and mentoring outstanding and diverse faculty, staff, and graduate students; and facilitating collegial relationships and collaboration among faculty, staff, and alumni that are mutually beneficial.

The chair oversees the department budget, secures financial resources to meet program objectives, oversees the department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, evaluates and mentors department faculty and staff, actively assists with fundraising activities, and represents the department on external committees. The chair will have an established record of academic leadership and scholarly activity (including peer-reviewed extramurally funded research as a principal investigator), and enthusiasm to substantially grow the department's research portfolio, a dedication to strong educational programming, an excellent record of service, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The Department Chair will work closely with the Dean and faculty to strengthen and expand interdisciplinary research and educational programs in support of the academic mission of the university and be committed to nurturing programs and departmental faculty activity. The chair will have dedicated time for administrative, educational, strategic and research initiatives. This position is a 12-month academic, tenure/tenure track appointment with administrative, teaching, research, and service responsibilities with a preferred start date of July 1, 2022, although start date is negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in a field such as or closely related to kinesiology from an accredited educational institution. A firm commitment to the role of diversity in all aspects of research, education, and service is essential. Successful candidates will exemplify a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a mid-to senior career level in kinesiology, exercise science, human movement, physical activity, or a related field, including: extramurally funded research as a principal investigator; experience building relationships in federal, industrial, and institutional environments; experience to lead the department in an era of research with big data and health data science – demonstrating an understanding of how this complex era is shaping the content and modalities of research and educational activities; and the ability to collaborate across disciplines, fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and teamwork.

The candidate will have an outstanding record of teaching at the graduate and professional level, along with good interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse faculty and student body. The candidate will be proven leader with the ability, in concert with the departmental faculty, Dean, and other leaders, to develop and realize a plan to achieve a wholistic strategic vision for the department that enhances the interdisciplinary components of the department. This is a role in which growth, rather than maintenance is desired. The candidate will have the ability to grow the department across all metrics while maintaining stability; develop innovative curricula and course building, especially at the undergraduate level; and foster an entrepreneurial and creative outlook that inspires and realizes the ambitions of the department for national and international prominence. Preferred candidates will exemplify sound judgment, creative strategic thinking, the ability to delegate yet maintain the highest standards, impeccable professional integrity, self-awareness, humility, trust, transparency, optimism, and empathy in all interactions. This position is located on the campus of Indiana University - Bloomington (IUB) in Bloomington, Indiana, and the successful candidate is expected to work on the IUB campus to allow full engagement with the department, school, campus, and community.

The Department of Kinesiology is celebrating 75 years of excellence in research, teaching and service and is ranked 11th nationally among Departments of Kinesiology by the National Academy of Kinesiology. The department includes over 40 full-time faculty including 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty conducting cutting edge research in exercise physiology, biomechanics, applied physiology, neuromuscular control of movement, athletic training, physical activity, and sports marketing and management. United in a shared focus of understanding the principles of human movement and the role of physical activity in leading a healthy life, the department enrolls over 1300 students in its B.S., M.S., M.P.H., and PhD programs and is ranked in the top 25 of Sports, Kinesiology, and Physical Education/Fitness programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
