Description:
The School of Architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NYC, is seeking to appoint an experienced Director of Production & Technology Facilities who has extensive knowledge of digital manufacturing platforms, wood and metal fabrication, and other advanced form-making technologies. The candidate we welcome into this position will apply their background in shop tech experience in Higher Ed for both their administrative and technical duties. The successful candidate will also provide direct oversight of seven (7) shops: wood shop, laser shop, 3D print shop, metal shop, robotics, and the CNC shop. They will be charged with establishing and enforcing safety protocols according to EPA and OSHA guidelines; hiring, training, and supervising technicians and student monitors; and guiding students and faculty in model making (entire classes and individuals). The position requires collegial and collaborative interactions with the School of Architecture dean, chairs, and coordinators and requires someone who can also advise on innovative new platforms and processes that respond to the curriculum, and serve accreditation requirements.

On a typical day you will be required to:

  • Supervise and support the School of Architecture technicians. Ensure that technicians train students and faculty on the proper use of equipment

  • Maintaining and stocking the shops/ repair of digital hardware and machinery; Establishing and enforcing safety protocols according to EPA and OSHA guidelines; Hiring, training, and supervising student monitors; and guiding students in model making (entire classes and individuals)

  • Liaise with Facilities and technicians on capital budgets, projects, and equipment upgrades. Coordinate equipment maintenance and repair schedules


Qualifications:
Education: BA degree in art, design, and/or tech-related field.

Experience: Five (5) years of shop tech experience in a higher educational institution with full knowledge of digital manufacturing platforms, wood and metal fabrication. Functional knowledge of the associated software platforms around these processes. A strong track record of managerial experience supervising staff in a university-level workshop environment is also required.

Required Skills:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, technicians, staff, and students alike
  • Expertise with the operation of all metalworking equipment, all common woodworking equipment, and common fabrication tools
  • Knowledge of shop safety and environmental health hazards, including emergency procedures
  • Knowledge of CAD and CNC software and tool operation
  • Knowledge of laser cutter operation
  • Capacity to build trust and cooperation across diverse communities
  • Interest in/experience of research-led design
