Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Represents the Vice Dean for Medical education in matters related to undergraduate medical education

Serves as chair of the Curriculum Management Committee (CMC) and attend the meeting of its subcommittees and other education-related groups, such as Basic Science and Clinical Science subcommittees.

Develops and leads a team of senior educators, each of whom is administratively responsible for a significant area of the educational mission.

Serves as the primary leader in the development and implementation of curricular initiatives.

Works with appropriate assistant and associate deans on scheduling and sequencing components of the curriculum; analyzing curricular content to ensure appropriate vertical and horizontal sequencing.

Ensures appropriate integration of foundational science and social, behavioral, public health, population health and health systems topics into the medical education programs.

Oversees the integration of basic and clinical science across the four years of medical school.

Ensures the undergraduate curriculum demonstrates evidence of coherence and coordination.

Provides vision and oversight for strategic curriculum development, implementation and assessment for the medical degree program.

Develops annual budget for all units under direct supervision.

Unique Duties
Strengthens partnerships with affiliate institutions and community physicians to benefit the educational mission.

Strengthens existing relationships with universities, foundations, and other organizations to help strengthen healthcare and ensure the success of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Responsible for the maintenance and update of the undergraduate medical education (UME) policies and procedures.

Manages the Office of Academic and Student Programs, including its professional and administrative personnel.

Works with the Office of Assessment, Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement to ensure that Wayne State University School of Medicine exceeds all accreditation requirements and is fulfilling our strategic plan.

Qualifications
An MD (or equivalent), PhD. EDD, with decanal experience in medical education from an accredited college or university.

A minimum of five years' experience in medical education administration and curricular development and implementation.

A strong track record as an educational scholar and superior clinician-educator.

Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Significant administrative and leadership experience in medical education programming and development; involvement in unique, innovative and alternative methods for teaching is desired.

An ability to champion education within a preeminent research institution and among a wide range of external constituencies.

A recognized presence at the national level with medical education organizations.

Experience in developing a strategic plan for medical education.

Fiscal experience in terms of developing and monitoring the budget and other resources for the UME division.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to effectively communicate with physicians, scientists and academic leaders.

Strong organization and process-management skills.

Skilled at organizing and managing human resources, including resolving conflict.

Experienced leader and has experience leading others with a developmental bias.

Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and a commitment to diversity.

Has the ability to cultivate a culture of formation vs. achievement.

Possesses a style that fosters and supports change and innovation, with an ability to delegate yet maintain overall control and set high standards.
