Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Primary responsibility: Oversight of the continuum of basic science education with the ultimate goal of ensuring that medical graduates have a strong foundation for clinical practice.

Partner with instructional designers, educational experts, and course directors to ensure proper design of sessions consistent with evidence from science of learning, and best practices.

Oversee the preclerkship curricular activities including scheduling of academic events.

Work with all thread and discipline directors to ensure integration of content across and within preclerkship courses.

Work with course directors to appropriately sequence components of the curriculum, ensure quality of sessions, accreditation compliance, continuously improving course outcomes based upon evaluations.

Work with the Office of Assessment to implement a sound assessment strategy and monitor consistent grading policies across all courses.

Oversee remediation efforts and create and approve academic plans.

Track and analyze curricular content alignment with learning objectives and course goals, identify design-related curricular problems, and devise solutions to the same.

As needed, serve as a director of preclerkship course(s).

Ensure student preparedness for the USMLE Step-1 exam.

Create and manage budget for preclerkship phase of the curriculum.

Advocate for infrastructure and other resource needs to ensure educational excellence.

Plan and conduct curriculum retreats.

Oversee, develop and implement curriculum innovations.

Support faculty development activities from the Office of Faculty Affairs.

Chair the Preclerkship Education Subcommittee meetings and follow up on discussion items.

Engage collaboratively with other members of the School of Medicine leadership team.

Represent School of Medicine in institutional, regional and national meetings.

Unique Duties
Works with the Office of Assessment, Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement to ensure that Wayne State University School of Medicine exceeds all accreditation requirements and is fulfilling the SOM strategic plan.

Responsible for the maintenance and update of the undergraduate medical education (UME) policies and procedures.

Manages the Office of Academic and Student Programs, including its professional and administrative personnel.

Strengthens partnerships with affiliate institutions and community physicians to benefit the educational mission.

Qualifications
PhD or MD degree with at least 5 years of experience in medical student education.

Demonstrated expertise in the application of curriculum development methodologies to medical education.

Demonstrated leadership role in curriculum management and reform.

Demonstrated ability to apply current educational theory and practice to medical education.

Demonstrated use of strategic planning, key performance indicators and quality improvement to drive organizational improvement.

Superb communication and effective team-based collaboration skills; demonstrated flexibility and adaptability.

Ability to design and work within complex systems.

Understanding of the legal, regulatory, and accreditation environment in which medical education operates.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to effectively communicate with physicians, scientists and academic leaders.

Strong organization and process-management skills.
Skilled at organizing and managing human resources, including resolving conflict.

Experienced leader and has experience leading others with a developmental bias.

Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and a commitment to diversity.

Has the ability to cultivate a culture of formation vs. achievement.

Possesses a style that fosters and supports change and innovation, with an ability to delegate yet maintain overall control and set high standards.
