Job Description Summary

The Auburn University RFID Laboratory, which is affiliated with multiple colleges on campus, invites applications for the Managing Director of the Aviation RFID Lab. This position will be a non-tenure track position at the rank of Professor of Practice.

The Auburn University RFID Lab is a proven leader in RFID research and technology application. The lab collaborates with partners to develop specialized technologies designed to enhance RFID and serialized identification sensor capabilities and improve data capture systems in a variety of technology fields, and researches and promotes the business case and value of adoption in aviation and aerospace.

In general, the director will oversee and manage the daily operations of the Aviation/Aerospace ID Laboratory which is engaged in planning and performing analyses and tests required for research, development, and/or quality control. Additionally, full supervisory responsibility for other employees is a major part of the position and includes training, evaluating, and recommending promotion and similar types of employment decisions. Specifically, the key duties and responsibilities related to this opportunity include:
  1. Plans and oversees the daily operations of the lab to meet schedules, standard procedures, records keeping and reporting requirements. Manages the design and planning of experiments, tests, and laboratory sequences; manages lab testing systems, and retention and presentation of lab data. Ensures lab testing and reporting consistencies are maintained with the large research datasets.
  2. Schedules and conducts specialized formal tours of the laboratory to foster relationships for potential funded research. Schedules events and activities, such as advisory board meetings and large conference events.
  3. Oversees and coordinates day-to-day activities associated with financial responsibilities, ordering supplies, p-card reconciliations, vendor reimbursements, and journal vouchers.
  4. Manages lab researchers to include schedule development, timekeeping activities, instructing and training students on the safe and proper use of the lab and associated equipment.
  5. Assist in Sponsored Project coordination and grant management, support development officers with external partner activities, visits, and events for the Aviation ID Lab and University fundraising purposes.
  6. Generates new research project concepts and oversees and participates in faculty and industry research projects.
  7. Recruits outside corporate and public partners and research funding for the Aviation ID Lab Board of Advisors.
  8. Schedules and conducts meetings and activities for the Aviation ID Lab Board of Advisors.
  9. Manages the Aviation ID Lab budget and generates revenue for the full lab budget under a soft funding model.
  10. Travel for recruiting, events, and research as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful candidates will have significant professional experience and expertise in RFID and identification technologies and familiarity with aviation applications of the technologies.
  • A proven dedication to managing projects and mentoring employees along with a demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with multiple constituents is highly desirable.
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required at the time employment begins.
  • The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.
