Organizational Unit Overview           

The Computer Science department has ten tenured or tenure-track positions and also employs fixed-term and adjunct instructors. Current areas of research in the department include software engineering, data management and mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognitive computing, information retrieval, programming languages, and computer science education. Last year, the department received a $2 million NSF grant to revolutionize the professional formation of computer scientists and software engineers. The department is also partnering with the College of Education on a $1 million NSF grant as part of the "Computer Science for All” initiative, focusing on activity at the middle school level.

The department offers five degree programs: a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, a Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering, and Master’s degrees in Computer Science, Data Science, and Software Engineering. Approximately 470 undergraduate and 80 graduate students are enrolled in these programs.

East Carolina University is a Doctoral/Research-Intensive level university with an enrollment of over 29,000 students. We offer a distinctive educational experience based on a strong tradition of teaching excellence, comprehensive research, and regional outreach. The campus is located in Greenville, North Carolina, about 25 minutes from the Pamlico Sound, one-and-half hours either from the state capital (Raleigh) or the beaches of the Outer Banks.

Job Duties                                               

The Department of Computer Science at East Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, to begin August 2022.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Computer Science and Software Engineering, mentor diverse students, develop collaborative research, establish an externally funded research program, and publish scholarly work.

Minimum Education/Experience       

Candidates are required to have a terminal degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science from a regionally accredited institution and a demonstrated potential for developing a research program at ECU; however, ABD with significant qualifications may be considered for initial employment. ABD candidates will be initially appointed at the probationary rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to his/her first reappointment. Rank will be commensurate with education and experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

The department is particularly interested in strong candidates in areas including software engineering, cybersecurity, data management, and AI/machine learning. Preferred candidates have a demonstrated record of scholarly work and potential to establish a robust research program, dedication to high-quality teaching, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and commitment to collaborate with diverse internal and external groups.
