The University of Bridgeport is a private university in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The university began as the first junior college in Connecticut in 1927. The School of Education seeks a qualified candidate to serve as the Director. As a leader of the faculty, the Director supports, encourages, and promotes excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Engineering, Business and Education.

The School does not offer undergraduate education degrees however, the School works with university faculty in a variety of departments to offer a minor in education. Students who minor in education are encouraged to apply to the graduate teacher preparation program.

The Opportunity

The Director is responsible for leadership, management, and administration of the academic programs in the School of Education. The Director will facilitate a vision and strategic direction while leading the School in a unified plan of action.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for all educational activities of the School of Education, ensuring academic integrity and high-quality instruction, and promoting excellence in faculty scholarship and service.
  • Serve as a strong internal and external advocate for the academic and public mission of the School, its faculty, and its students.
  • Articulate and facilitate a long-term vision for the School within the context of the University’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Build effective internal and external relationships to ensure compliance with accrediting agencies and the Connecticut Department of Education.
  • Build effective relationships with P-12 partners and community stakeholders.
  • Recommend measures of implementing, updating, and improving the School’s curriculum through assessment of learning. Facilitate program development building on traditional strengths and research-based practices in traditional and on-line programs.
  • Facilitate academic scheduling at the Bridgeport and Waterbury campuses to include ensuring course availability for student progress, faculty assignments and space allocation.
  • Provide leadership in ensuring that the School meets its goals of recruitment, retention, progression to degree, and on-time graduation of its students enrolled in majors.
  • Work collaboratively with the Admissions team to promote recruitment and retention of students.
  • Resolve student issues regarding curriculum or degree completion and mediating disputes between students and faculty.
  • Ensure that departments offer and/or support accurate advising of students and maintains appropriate resources (ex. degree plan, checklist, website descriptions, etc.) for students’ use to support student success.
  • Provide the necessary support to faculty that ensures the timely submission of student performance information/data (ex. grades), including the use of advising and other resources that promote student success.
  • Represent the School on University committees to ensure the full inclusion of the School within the University of Bridgeport; serve as Ex-officio on all School committees.
  • Develop and establish alumni relationships with the School of Education graduates, together with the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations.
Human Resources
  • Direct the recruitment and development of a diverse and talented faculty and staff, and recommend to the Dean appointments, reappointments, and separations.
  • Evaluate the performance of faculty; coordinate professional development of the faculty and recommend faculty for contract renewal.
  • Support collaborative decision-making processes with all stakeholders, particularly faculty related decisions (e.g., hiring, overloads, etc.), in the context of shared governance and in alignment with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Develop, sustain, and enhance diverse and inclusive partnerships with federal, state, and local community agencies; institutions of higher education; and schools, particularly in encouraging and supporting business and economic outreach activities and fostering collaboration among the outreach units.
  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately delegate responsibility and authority, making timely decisions and solving problems.
  • Foster an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrate outstanding interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to motivate faculty and staff and develop a collaborative environment.
  • Ensures effective management of financial resources, including budget planning and management and the ability to prioritize the School’s resources.
  • Support the research of grant opportunities and assist as needed.
  • Represent the School at fund raising events. Oversees the School’s branding and marketing efforts to enhance its visibility and reputation.
  • Work some evening and weekend hours as needed to effectively oversee the activities of the School.
  • Be available for other duties as determined jointly with the Dean and/or Provost.
Qualifications, Training, and Experience

Minimum qualifications
  • A doctorate from an accredited college or university in education or a related field.
  • Demonstrated record of instructional, scholarly, and service record to the university.
  • Open rank with at least four years of administrative experience at the department chair level or higher in an institution of higher education
  • Demonstrated experience with academic program development and innovation, online learning, and distance education
  • Demonstrated experience with academic planning, strategic planning, enrollment, and financial management
  • Demonstrated experience in accreditation processes, including applications and re-accreditation
  • An understanding of budgets and finances and a demonstrated ability to manage budgets particularly in times of economic restraint
  • Demonstrated experience in shared governance
  • Demonstrated high level of integrity and a leadership style that evokes trust and embraces transparency
  • Proven commitment to diversity among students, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality, valuing and practicing consultative and collaborative decision-making processes.
  • A commitment to the principles of effective educator preparation.
  • Knowledge of current practices and requirements at the federal, state, and local level.
