Position Function:

The incumbent will develop an exemplary educational program in precision agriculture technologies with a primary emphasis on agronomic crops.

Department Profile:

Mississippi State University is Mississippi's senior comprehensive land-grant institution and has the largest on-campus enrollment (>22,000) of the eight state institutions of higher learning. All components of the university have a strong commitment to teaching, research, and service. The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences has 31 on- and 26 off-campus faculty members engaged in teaching, research, and extension and/or service programs, most of who carry joint appointments. The programs are supported by state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment, and trained support and professional staff. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Environmental Sciences in Agricultural Systems, with Master's or Doctoral graduate students concentrating in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Weed Science.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Facilitate the development and coordinated instruction of Precision Agriculture coursed, develop and manage applied skills courses in precision agriculture and. teach assigned courses in precision agriculture and agronomy with course descriptions as outline in course syllabus, promote and maintain effective relationships with other colleges and universities, and where appropriate, maintain liaison relationships with industry to assist students in finding cooperative education placements, internships, or job shadowing experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

Appointment at the Instructor level requires an earned MS degree in agronomy, weed science, plant physiology, soil science, plant pathology, entomology, agriculture engineering, or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Appointment at the Assistant Clinical Professor level requires an earned PhD in agronomy, weed science, plant physiology, soil science, plant pathology, entomology, agriculture engineering, or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Acceptable candidate must have outstanding English verbal and written communication skills and should have experience in one or more of the following areas: weed management, plant growth, soil fertility, crop production systems, irrigation technologies, agricultural engineering, and/or remote sensing and geospatial technologies. The candidate must be familiar with methodologies, tools, techniques, and/or concepts related to the application and use of precision agriculture in their discipline and related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in teaching and/or research focused on agronomic crops and precision agriculture concepts with good working knowledge of agricultural production practices is preferred. Willingness to address up-to-date technologies in a team member approach in collaboration with other scientists is preferred.
