This open rank, tenure-track faculty position will serve as the academic visionary to lead and direct programs and projects in a unique collaboration between the College of Social Sciences, Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and the State of Hawai‘i Med-QUEST Division, Department of Human Services. This hire will provide leadership for a large expansion of projects that have been underway in SSRI for several years and totaling more than $20 million over the coming 5 years. Duties include conducting applied research in one or more of the following areas: federal, state and local public healthcare, health economics, or data science. Other Conditions: To begin August 1, 2022 or January 1, 2023, subject to position clearance and availability of funds. A tenure track appointment with the Social Science Research Institute or relevant area. Continuous recruitment. Review of applications will begin on May 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.  Position fully funded by extramural funds for three years; instructional duties will be covered by extramural funds for this period. 

 Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide academic vision, leadership, and strategic direction over a research portfolio that includes healthcare-related contracts with Hawai'i state agencies (e.g., Med-Quest Division) and the state’s All-Payer Claims Database;   
  2. Conduct applied research in one or more of the following areas: federal, state and local public healthcare, health economics, or data science. 
  3. Publish in scholarly peer-reviewed academic journals, and serve as principal investigator on extramurally funded projects;
  4. Lead health-related evaluation projects with a team of co-investigators, graduate research assistants and undergraduate interns that informs local and national health policy;
  5. Teach undergraduate or graduate courses on quantitative analysis, program evaluation, implementation science and/or research methods, as needed;
  6. Conduct service and outreach in congruence with the College of Social Sciences’ mission;
  7. Other duties as assigned by the SSRI director.


Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Professor

  1. A Ph.D. in psychology, public health, economics, sociology, and/or related field from an accredited college or university or foreign equivalent;
  2. Demonstrated ability to conduct applied health policy analysis;
  3. Demonstrated record of research achievement (scholarly peer-reviewed publications, grants) commensurate with time in field;
  4. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses;
  5. Experience advising students in the applicant's area of expertise.

Associate Professor

In addition to the minimum qualifications for Assistant Professor as stated above:

  1. Minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent.

Full Professor

In addition to the minimum qualifications for Associate Professor as stated above:

  1. Minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of associate professor or equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications (all ranks)

  1. Demonstrated ability to communicate statistical analysis and/or research results to a wide range of audiences;
  2. Demonstrated ability to manage projects while supervising staff, graduate and/or undergraduate students;
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach quantitative methods and/or statistics courses;
  4. Demonstrated ability managing large teams;
  5. Demonstrated proficiency with multiple types of healthcare data; 
  6. Demonstrated ability with database development and management;
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare systems.
