Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Recruitment is responsible for counseling and assisting prospective students and their families in the admissions process, carrying out daily operations of the office, and developing projects as assigned. The position plays an integral role in the development and oversight of inclusive recruiting strategies that work to meet the goals outlined in Furman University's Strategic Diversity Plan. In addition, this role is responsible for executing the internal admissions plan and cultivating both external and internal relationships that support perennial enrollment success.

The chosen candidate will need to possess a passion for recruitment, especially working with those who have historically been underrepresented or underserved in higher education. Although the work of diversity recruitment is expected of all members of the Office of Admissions, this role will work to ensure that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is centered in recruitment initiatives and among the team.

Job Description:
Key Responsibilities:Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Admissions Communication and Programming
  • Supports the recommendations put forth by the Task Force on Slavery and Justice and leads the recruitment and relationship-building efforts of the South Carolina High School Diversity Initiative. This initiative seeks to support students in communities throughout the Upstate, midlands, low country, and Pee Dee areas of South Carolina who have historically been underrepresented or underserved within Furman's community.
  • Working in conjunction with fellow members of the Office of Admissions, this role is responsible for the execution of on-campus and virtual programming to support the recruitment of students of diverse backgrounds. This work may include receptions, event days, phone-a-thons, or educational workshops.
  • Provides feedback and recommendations on the Office of Admissions' diversity recruitment strategies, seeking to ensure inclusive measures are taken throughout all recruiting initiatives.
  • Seeks to develop relationships with community-based organizations who work to support students of diverse backgrounds and those who have historically been underrepresented or underserved in higher education.
  • Supports the Enrollment Management division in ensuring practices, communications and programming are inclusive of all individual dimensions of identity.
Campus Collaboration and Engagement
  • Serves as lead for Mosaic, a student group operating out of the Office of Admissions focused on providing opportunities for connection between current students and prospective students of diverse backgrounds. This work includes facilitating monthly meetings, ensuring active participation in the Office of Admissions recruiting events, and providing opportunities for personal and professional development, as well as opportunities for engagement with Furman alumni.
  • Supervises the Diversity Fellows, individuals who serve as the Mosaic leads for an academic year. Diversity Fellows complete a year-long role, during which they develop a greater understanding for higher education as a career field, assist with the development of diversity, equity and inclusion programming and aid in the oversight of the Mosaic student group.

Admissions Recruitment
  • Plans and executes extensive in-person recruitment travel including visiting high schools, attending college fairs, college workshops, receptions, one-on-one appointments with prospective students, as well as other types of recruiting events to connect with prospective students. Recruitment travel often includes 5-6 weeks of travel throughout the fall and approximately 1-2 weeks each spring.
  • Engages frequently with prospective students and other key constituency groups through remote connection including virtual high school visits, virtual college fairs, virtual one-on-one appointments, and on-going facilitation of virtual workshops and webinars.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with school counselors, community-based organizations, and other individuals who work to support the college admissions process in assigned regions.
  • Facilitates frequent and on-going communication with prospective students, current students, Furman alumni, parents, individuals who help to support the college admissions experience, as well as other key constituency groups.
  • Leads group and individual information sessions with prospective students and their families on a daily basis.
Qualifications and Skillsets:
  • Bachelor's Degree, required.
  • Valid U.S. Driver's License required.
  • Bilingual, desirable.
  • Previous experience working in college admissions, college counseling, or with a community-based organization for at least three to five years.
  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills, as this role requires frequently presenting in front of audiences of various size, formats, and demographics.
  • Enthusiasm for creating cross-campus collaboration that fosters a supportive experience for students from the prospective student stage to enrollment.
  • Ability to manage time, remain organized, and promptly correspond with various constituency groups.
  • Self-motivated, enjoys finding solutions to new challenges, and can thrive working independently, as well as with a team.


Reporting Structure:

The Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Recruitment reports to the Director of Admissions.
Work Conditions
  • Work is largely performed under usual office conditions. The Office of Admissions is a student-facing office, which requires in-person work. Opportunities to work from home may be permissible at certain times throughout the year.
  • This role does require some evening and weekend work throughout the year, most often during the fall and spring recruiting and yield seasons.
  • Maintains frequent communication with direct supervisor on the development of all pertinent activities, including diversity recruitment strategies, trends, and proposals for adjustments to recruitment strategies.
  • Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.
