The Department of Special Education at Texas Tech University invites applications from innovative and thoughtful colleagues as a full-time, tenured chair engaged in issues impacting our programs. The position will start September 1, 2022, and appointments are for the twelve-month academic year.

The Texas Tech University College of Education, with over 2,000 students, offers a nationally recognized undergraduate teacher preparation program, and 21 graduate degrees that prepare students for professional or academic positions in education. The department and college place a focus on strategic outreach and engaged scholarship. We collaborate with local, regional, state, national and global partners to address complex problems facing individuals and communities. In recognition of its extraordinary community outreach efforts, the college received the 2018 W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).

Responsibilities of the department chair include, but are not limited to:  

 

  • Fostering a positive and inclusive culture of the department for its students, staff, and faculty;
  • Providing leadership to the programs in curriculum development, faculty personnel;
  • Conducting annual evaluations of faculty and staff who are in the purview of the department and other activities that add to the culturally-relevant professional development of its faculty and students;
  • Cultivating the research development of the faculty and students in the department with the Associate Dean of Research;
  • Representing the department and College in public settings;
  • Meeting the enrollment management goals of the university and college in your department in concert with the efforts of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs within the COE;
  • Addressing student issues within the programs that you serve;
  • Maintaining a strong presence and being accessible on campus;
  • Participate in service duties and other duties as directed by school need and/or the Dean. – Service duties include program building, as well as commitment to extracurricular activities. Service to the department, college, and university is expected.

 

Required qualifications include: 

  • Completed doctorate in Special Education from a major accredited university; 
  • Previous administrative experience in leading programs or a department of Special Education; 
  • Demonstrated record of tenured status within the college; 
  • Demonstrated commitment to serve diverse, high-need populations and address issues of equity and access;
  • Demonstrated record in grant funding and research in Special Education.

 

Preferred qualifications include: 

  • Holds the rank of full professor;
  • Track record of doctoral advising and committee chairing.
