Kenyon College, a highly selective, nationally ranked
liberal arts college in central Ohio, invites applications for a
full-time VISITING position in the CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT at the rank
of Assistant Professor beginning in July 2022. We seek candidates
with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring,
and who prioritize active and inclusive pedagogies.
Responsibilities include teaching 5 courses over two
semesters in 2022-2023. Course assignment will include courses
and/or lab sections in either introductory or organic chemistry;
and advanced courses depending on their area of expertise; with the
option of non-majors courses in environmental chemistry or
neurochemistry. Candidates with expertise in instrumental analysis
are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should hold a
Ph.D. degree or expect completion by the start of the fall
semester.
Visiting faculty in chemistry enjoy access to rich
professional opportunities, including professional development
funds, eligibility for internal grants, access to research spaces
and equipment, and modest support for research expenses. The
Department of Chemistry graduates 15-20 majors annually and mentors
15-30 research students per semester; visiting faculty may
supervise research students if desired. The Department has provided
active leadership and support in recent initiatives that have
established Kenyon College as a leader in STEM inclusion research
and practice: an HHMI Inclusive Excellence Award, two NSF S-STEM
grants, a Clare Boothe Luce award, and a Sherman Fairchild
grant.
A complete application comprises: 1) a cover letter
that describes prior research and teaching experience; 2) a 2-page
statement of the applicant's teaching philosophy, objectives, and
methods; 3) a Curriculum Vitae; 4) an unofficial graduate
transcript; and 5) contact information for three professional
references who will provide letters of recommendation upon request.
Competitive applications will describe specific examples of past
accomplishments and prospective ideas. Both cover letter and
teaching statement should demonstrate how the candidate addresses
challenges of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their
professional work. Applicants may, but need not, include a brief
research statement.
All application materials must be submitted
electronically through Kenyon's employment website:
https://careers.kenyon.edu. Review
of applications will begin immediately and continue until the
position is filled. References may be prompted by email to upload
their letters of recommendation to the application website at a
later stage. Please advise references that a strong recommendation
letter should describe specific evidence of teaching excellence, of
research experience, and of commitment to inclusion and equity.
Please direct questions regarding the position or the
application process to Simon Garcia, Search Committee Chair
(
garcias@kenyon.edu).
