GENERAL INFORMATION:  John Tyler Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of the largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia.  With campuses in Chester and Midlothian in the metropolitan Richmond area and at off-campus classrooms throughout the area, John Tyler Community College provides quality educational opportunities that inspire student success and community vitality. RESPONSIBILITIES:  Our college is seeking qualified individuals for the Associate Dean of Business, Engineering and Technology position.  This is a full-time twelve-month administrative faculty position.

Provide high-level administrative support to the academic division by assisting the Dean in both college-wide daily operations of the division, and as appropriate, provide college-wide curriculum leadership responsibilities. The Associate Dean will cultivate constructive working relationships with the Dean, classified staff, and full-time and adjunct teaching faculty in the division, and collaborate with Associate Deans and staff in other academic divisions, as needed. The Associate Dean will report to the Dean of BET, and may act in the Dean’s place for routine and specialized administrative and academic tasks and will perform special projects as assigned.  Duties include but are not limited to providing excellent customer service to students and faculty, resolving student concerns and issues, assisting with development of the course schedule, reviewing faculty technology requests, completing adjunct faculty evaluations, assisting with program assessment, advising students, assisting with management of day-to-day operations, working on special projects, assisting with evening supervision, and serving on committees internal and external to the institution, orienting new full-time faculty and serving as a point-of-contact for faculty questions and concerns, and managing other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university; superior communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, time-management, and written skills.  The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Supervise, manage, and develop college faculty and staff.
  • Provide evening campus coverage and to be flexible to work at both of the College’s campuses. 
  • Provide collaborative leadership. 
  • Work in a collegial, diverse, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural college environment. 
  • Manage federal, state, and local laws/policies relevant to JTCC in order to ensure compliance. 
  • Assess instructional programs and review students’ learning outcomes to ensure achievement of academic objectives. 
  • Use MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint

Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check will be required.  Preferred qualifications:  Postsecondary administrative experience, especially in two-year colleges; education beyond the master’s; experience with instructional technology. Candidates should have at least three years of full-time teaching experience or its equivalent (30 Adjunct Faculty teaching credits = 1 year of FT teaching), and prior academic administrative experience in a community college setting or in higher education institution.
