Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Engineering and Inspection is currently hiring a self motivated, experienced Lead Inspector. The Lead Inspector will perform a variety of duties, focusing on managing NAU’s building inspection program and collaborating across departments to support compliance with the International Building Code (IBC) and other project-specific codes and regulations. Job duties and functions listed below.

Manage trades inspection program - 35%

  • Coordinate NAU trades inspections for new construction and remodel of campus buildings
  • Establish documentation standards for NAU’s building inspection program, maintain necessary records and prepare required reports
  • Manage NAU trades inspectors’ certifications and training, and attainment and maintenance of the appropriate competencies to perform their inspection duties to the standard of the IBC
  • Develop and conducts in-house training programs covering construction inspection as required
  • Make recommendations for program improvements as needed to support NAU’s building inspection program and compliance with the IBC

Compliance review (building plans, International Building Code, NAU Technical Standards) and departmental collaboration - 30%

  • Pass required work-related examinations to maintain certification in one or more inspection specialties per the IBC
  • Provides subject matter expertise for NAU stakeholders, and applies that expertise to their role
  • Perform construction plan reviews in conjunction with the NAU Fire Marshal to support designs consistent with the IBC, and other applicable building codes and standards
  • Provide technical information to trades inspectors, NAU colleagues and contractors and reinforces contractor adherence to technical standards as prescribed by NAU Project Managers
  • Facilitate code interpretation, and resolves problems and conflicts in a solutions-oriented manner
  • Coordinate with the NAU Fire Marshal, NAU Planning, Design and Construction, Facility Services, project contractors, and the appropriate Building Official (internal or third party) as needed to prioritize IBC compliance throughout projects
  • Attend inspection related meetings and plans, communicates with project stakeholders to ensure that decisions and code interpretations are as uniform as possible

Site visits and inspections - 20%

  • Conduct regular site inspections for active projects to support IBC compliance and develop trades inspection schedules to meet NAU’s compliance needs
  • May perform all the duties of trades inspectors as necessary to meet business needs

Program Documentation - 10%

  • Establish documentation standards for NAU’s building inspection program, inspector credentials, maintain necessary inspection program records and prepare required reports

Other duties as assigned - 5%


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field AND
  • 1-2 years of project management experience AND
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial building inspection certification in one or more areas
  • Commercial building plan review and inspection experience
