Summary

Provide Grant review and editorial assistance to Faculty and Staff in all Colleges of Midwestern University on the Glendale campus in support of Biomedical Research, educational and other important initiatives. This position supports the Glendale campus, but may be located on either the Glendale, Arizona or Downers Grove, Illinois campus

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews and recommends all grant proposals for approval, and subsequently submits all grant proposals on behalf of the institution.
    • An emphasis is placed on the budget and budget justification for accuracy and granting agency compliance.
  • Provide expert editorial assistance to faculty in the development of research and training grants through consultation (before proposal is begun or as work is in progress).
  • Edit and proofread text of grants, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other material, including recommending reorganization for better flow, rewording for clarity, checking bibliography, verifying concordance between figures and text, suggesting new figures, and editing to comply with specified style guidelines and grant requirements.
    • The level of detailed review provided to any grant depends on the lead time provided by the principal investigator and the number of other proposals going out at the time.
  • Provides written review of Consortium Agreements to the Associate Director of ORSP.
  • Research a variety of topics and information for faculty and create/write sections as templates and online resources in support of the proposal and submission process where sections may be used in numerous grants, articles, or other materials.
  • Consult with faculty to provide technical advice in the area of proposal presentation and dissemination of information that can be used in the grant proposal revision process.
  • Inform faculty and staff of upcoming government, corporate, and foundation grants; conferences; fellowships/scholarships; reports; and other relevant information.
  • Identify, research, and disseminate to individual faculty members lists of potential funding sources, and information (e.g., news items) specific to their research and teaching interests.
  • Provide editorial expertise to faculty and students, as required, via presentations or 1-on-1 consultation.
  • Assists in developing research policies, SOPs and training materials as required by federal statutes or as requested by the ORSP Associate Director.
  • Assists in the preparation of the ORSP Research Annual Report that includes proposals submitted, grants funded, publications, and intramural funding.
  • Become cross-trained in multiple areas to provide general overlap with responsibilities of other ORSP personnel.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein as requested by the ORSP Associate Director.
  • Provides post-award accounting services including budget oversight to ensure financial integrity and compliance with regulatory guidelines. Monitors subcontractor invoices and follows–up with any variances.

Education and/or Experience                                                   

Bachelor’s degree with a background in scientific manuscript writing. Minimum of three years of grants experience for a university, federal, corporate, foundation, and/or professional agency or any equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.  Previous Research Administrative experience is preferred.

Computer Skills                                               

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience using electronic research administration software (e.g. InfoEd Global) preferred.

Language Skills                                                

High skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, and boards of directors.

Other Skills

Ability to collaborate with different levels of the institution or organization, both internally and externally. Knowledge of policies and regulations governing federal funding and accompanying compliance issues. Knowledge of editing rules and guidelines. Knowledge of contemporary writing styles. Knowledge of research methods and funding sources. Skill in designing resource tools, materials and presentations for writing proposals.  

Reasoning Ability

Intermediate skills:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Intermediate skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions and proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
