Brief Description of Duties

Bodywise is a grant funded University of the District of Columbia program. The objective of the program is to promote health, wellness and fitness to the seniors 60 years old and above in the District of Columbia. The incumbent serves as Certified Exercise Instructor for the grant funded position to ensure that the program goals, policies, procedures, and requirements are met successfully. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Project Specialist for the Institute of Gerontology, within the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), University of the District of Columbia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Instructs groups of seniors in exercise and health promotion activities.
  • Demonstrates techniques and methods during class. Observes participants and informs them of corrective measures necessary to improve their skills.
  • Communicates clearly to participants the importance of exercise activities
  • Maintains equipment inventories and selects, stores, and issues equipment as needed.
  • Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations governing recreational facilities, and the use of exercise equipment.
  • Monitors participant's physical attributes and social skills.
  • Plans routines, chooses appropriate music, and chooses different movements for various muscle groups, depending on participants' capabilities and limitations.
  • Meets all classes as scheduled for the full class period, verifies class rosters, prepares weekly reports & timesheets and other assignments, maintains proper attendance, turns in all required attendance reports and timesheets at the end of each week, and attends staff meetings.
  • Maintains cooperative working relations with community services agencies and organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • A combination of education and professional experience suitable to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Current First-Aid, CPR and fitness/exercise instructor or equivalent certifications
  • Background in exercise education or related area required
  • Experience as a Certified Exercise Instructor for seniors is highly desirable as well as a commitment to enhancing the lives of seniors in DC
  • Experience in health promotion and teaching one or more of the following exercise activities: water aerobics, chair/movement, walk & stretch, yoga and low-impact aerobics classes for seniors

Condition of Employment:
This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.

Employment Benefits: Selectee will be eligible for annual (vacation) and sick leave only on a pro-rated basis.
