As the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) embarks on a multi-year human capital management (HCM) information technology project, the Office of Human Resources is looking for a talented Compensation Specialist to join the team.  This position directly collaborates and assists various clients across campus with identifying their compensation needs and issues.  In addition, each member will proactively work with their assigned clients to identify their compensation needs and developing plans to achieve their clients’ goals.
The compensation team will assist in analyzing various compensation practices a process to ensure the new HCM system design and functionality.  This will be a great opportunity to come in and help streamline compensation business processes and work on a great team and a wonderful institution.

  • Collaborate with clients to determine compensation needs and develop action plans to meet the client’s requests.  Consult with clients to determine effective and efficient organizational structure and resource allocation within budgetary restraints to meet the needs of the unit.
  • Perform job analysis and job evaluation to include organizational analysis and recognize the multiple markets in which the University competes for talent.  Maintains market composites and market pricing to determine internal and external job value. Identify job descriptions and career ladders/pathways to assist clients in designing effective development opportunities within their unit.
  • Analyze compensation data to determine trends and variances. Recommend a variety of approaches to address variances and compensation issues. Identify, develop, and implement process improvements to enhance workflow and operations.
  • Review new positions in anticipation of recruitment to ensure appropriate classification. Based on position-specific information, determine if an existing description for classification. Modify and create job descriptions that accurately reflect current roles, responsibilities, and requirements, and completes career pathways.
  • Participate as a member committees, projects, or initiatives. Assist in development of project plans and defining scope of work.
  • Perform integrity analysis for compensation data; identify issues; and provide recommendations to correct.  Follow-up with clients to ensure data is accurate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  Qualifications    Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in job analysis, job evaluation, or other related human resource experience, to include demonstrated experience in database and spreadsheet tools.   Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:  
  • Accomplish responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical compensaton knowledge, principles, and concepts.  Applies intermediate level compensation knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills of employment laws and requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance.
  • Ability to resolve issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking within general guidelines and significant interpretation.  Independently anticipate needs of clients and resolve non-routine matters and solutions that require considerable analysis and evaluation of various alternatives.
  • Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems including PeopleSoft, Taleo, and Microsoft Office Suite including SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access.  Experience with CompAnalyst salary platform or similar salary survey platform.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts and work cooperatively with others and independently.
  • Independently manage or administer compensation programs, processes, projects, or resources to assigned clients.
