Statement of the Job:

The University of Maine College of Education and Human Development seeks applicants for a full-time, fiscal year Associate Dean of Undergraduate and Teacher Education at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The Associate Dean is responsible for setting and achieving goals that fulfill the College’s mission and that align with the strategic priorities of the University, in relation to undergraduate and teacher education. The right candidate will be a collaborative and visionary leader who shares the College’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice.  The Associate Dean will harness the College’s potential for growth of its existing programs and lead in the development of new programs and initiatives; oversee and supervise undergraduate student services; facilitate ongoing teacher education assessment and accreditation processes; and identify and facilitate external funding initiatives that amplify the impact of undergraduate and teacher education. 

 The College:

As the academic home to 1600 students, the College of Education and Human Development offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees through three Schools, which work together to strengthen the wellbeing of individuals, families, schools and communities. The School of Learning and Teaching houses the majority of the teacher education programs. The School of Educational Leadership, Higher Education and Human Development offers programs that cover the entire lifespan, including the undergraduate child development and family relations major, and graduate programs in educational leadership and higher education. The School of Kinesiology, Physical Education and Athletic Training provides students with exceptional opportunities to train at Maine’s only NCAA Division I school, as well as to learn in the state’s best classroom—the great outdoors.  Collaborating with external and internal partners, the College provides state and national leadership through its research, teaching, innovation, and engagement. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Serve on the Dean’s Administrative Leadership Team
  • Advise the Dean on matters of strategic importance to the College’s mission specific to undergraduate and teacher education
  • Set and advance curricular and programmatic goals in undergraduate and teacher education, in collaboration with College and School leadership
  • Identify and facilitate external funding initiatives that amplify the impact of undergraduate and teacher education
  • Represent the College at University Associate Deans & Directors meetings

Enrollment Management

  • Collaborate with School Directors, the Division of Enrollment Management, and the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment to set and achieve enrollment goals for undergraduate and teacher education programs
  • Liaise with the Office of Admissions and Recruitment and the Division of Marketing and Communications to support healthy enrollment growth
  • Oversee admissions and recruitment events focused on undergraduate and teacher education programs

Undergraduate Student Support

  • Oversee undergraduate academic and advising support services
  • Advise faculty and advisors regarding concerns with student dispositions
  • Refine and administer undergraduate scholarship process
  • Refine and administer academic action process
  • Oversee selection of undergraduate awards and honors 
  • Respond to Title IX concerns
  • Serve on University Student Aid Appeals Committee

Accreditation and Reporting

  • Lead faculty and staff in developing effective program and school level assessments associated with student learning outcomes.
  • Lead ​​undergraduate and teacher education program accreditation and review, including compiling and submitting associated reports to university bodies and external accreditors

The Associate Dean will also serve on various campus and community committees, assume the leadership role in the absence of the Dean, and perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise and evaluate the Director of Field Experiences and Teacher Preparation, Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising, and Accreditation Data Specialist.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Earned doctorate in education, human development, or other discipline closely related to one offered in the College
  • Qualifications for a faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor in one of the schools in the College 
  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities, establish priorities, and lead innovative strategic efforts critical to the success of university programs
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with people from a diverse range of disciplines and groups
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators of the university, as well as external constituents

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising and supporting professional staff
  • Knowledge of contemporary student development issues and practices
  • Prior success leading department, school, college, or university level initiatives; 
  • Experience assembling successful teams
  • Experience obtaining research funding from federal agencies
