The University of Washington, School of Social Work invites applications for two (2) Full-Time Assistant Teaching Professors (non-tenure track, 9-month service period, multi-year contract) to work in the Office of Field Education, effective September 16, 2022. Our School’s social justice mission leads us to invest in recruiting colleagues who in their practice and service demonstrate experience with, knowledge of, and responsiveness to the needs of culturally diverse and oppressed populations.

Responsibilities:

Assistant Teaching Professors in the Office of Field Education (OFE) are known as Field Faculty and support the educational operations of the Office of Field Education. Central to the work of Field Faculty is professional relationship-building with students, field instructors, practicum sites, administrators, OFE colleagues, and the SSW faculty community, with the goal of fostering a collaborative and impactful field experiences that aligns with SSW values and CSWE guidelines. Field Faculty members assess the educational and professional development needs of students, provide mentorship, and advise BASW and MSW students in their field education settings. Field Faculty coordinate all aspects of student field placements and serve as liaisons for Field Instructors at community-based practicum sites. Field Instructors are provided support, orientation, and training in field education knowledge and skills, to assure both the quality of the student’s educational experience as well as the Field Instructor’s professional development as field instructor-educators. Field Faculty participate in the School's shared governance and provide leadership for collaborative curriculum and program development and other initiatives in the Office of Field Education, BASW and MSW programs. Field Faculty work with students across the School's academic programs, including the MSW Extended Degree Program, MSW Day Program, MSW Advanced Standing Program, and the BASW Program.

Specific duties include:

  • Demonstrate awareness, respect and understanding of the needs of a highly diverse student body, representing many marginalized identities, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Effectively relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, faculty, community groups, and alumni, appreciating each group's interests and concerns as it relates to field education.
  • Engage in personal reflection, implementation, and integration of anti-racist, anti-oppressive social work practice and education throughout work with students, agencies, and field instructors.
  • Provide high quality teaching to students, including seminar leadership
  • Translate curriculum into course development and design, using multiple teaching modalities
  • Articulate the current issues, innovations, and best practices in anti-racist and anti-oppressive field education.
  • Provide advising, mentorship, educational needs assessment, and integration of student learning in the field and classroom for students
  • Assess and identify student educational needs and career goals with appropriate field placements to meet those needs.
  • Participate in the development, design, coordination, and delivery/teaching of field education curriculum for students
  • Ensure the timely completion of practicum requirements, including plan development, evaluation of student field learning outcomes, Learning Contracts, and other expectations, as well as updates of practicum site information.
  • Provide ongoing, timely support to students and field instructors if challenges to student learning emerge.
  • Manage and coordinate student and practicum placements through the centralized, School-wide computerized database system.
  • Work independently and organize work duties efficiently

Student-centered engagement:

  • Provide educational and professional advising and mentorship to students
  • Conduct student educational needs assessment to inform practicum placement
  • Facilitate the integration of field and classroom learning for the student
  • Match student educational needs and career goals with appropriate field placements.
  • Participate in the development, design, coordination, and delivery/teaching of field education curriculum for students
  • Ensure the timely completion of practicum requirements, including plan development, evaluation of student field learning outcomes, Learning Contracts, and other expectations, as well as updates of practicum site information.
  • Provide ongoing, timely support to students and field advisors if challenges to student learning emerge.
  • Manage and coordinate student and practicum placements through the centralized, School-wide computerized database system.
  • Manage to work independently and organize work duties efficiently

Placement Site Engagement:

  • Field instructor support advising, orientation, liaison, training, and integration of learning objectives in field and classroom
  • Engage in, support, and mediate relationships with students, practicum sites, and field instructors through formal liaison function
  • Participate in the development, design, innovation, and coordination of agency-based field education curriculum and teaching modalities for Field Instructors
  • Demonstrate teaching skills for peer professional education and training
  • Advise and assist agencies in the development of a field education program for students in placement

Field Education Program Development:

  • Participate in the design and development of field education curricula·
  • Assist in the recruitment, identification, and capacity-building of new and current field practicum sites
  • Advise and assist agencies in the development of a field education program for students in placement
  • Actively and positively collaborate as a team member in Office of Field Education governance, program development, curricular initiatives, and other activities

SSW Professional Engagement:

  • Develop modalities to center the integration of classroom learning and practice experience in the field, in collaboration with classroom and field faculty ·
  • Engage in internal School of Social Work governance, program development, curricular and other initiatives as required of all faculty
  • Participate in School & UW governance and other initiatives relevant to field education and social work
  • Actively participate in faculty meetings and School of Social Work Committees, as assigned

Scholarly engagement:

  • Demonstrate scholarship and contribution to knowledge through:
    •  introduction of new knowledge or methods into course content;
    • creation or use of innovative pedagogical methods;
    • development of new courses, curricula, or course materials;
    • participation in professional conferences;
    • receipt of grants or awards;
    • contributions to interdisciplinary teaching;
    • participation and leadership in professional associations;
    • presentations to agencies, students, or community groups
    • significant contributions to professionals at other educational institutions
    • Leadership in the regional field education consortium.

Community Engagement:

  • Serve/participate in community-based organizations in significant volunteer capacity, such as Board membership, Community-based Initiative leadership
  • Participate in community initiatives relevant to social work practice
  • Participate in community-based activities relevant to social justice, anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice/advocacy
  • Participate in the development and support of community-based field education efforts
  • Participate in organizational or community-based initiatives to support and develop social work education
  • Participate in organizational or community-based initiatives to support professional social work development
  •  Participate in organizational or community-based initiatives to support development of the social work profession

Additional Responsibilities:

  • This position will be expected to work with computerized data management systems and information technology, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access
  • This position will be expected to meet with students, field sites, and field instructors, including some evening and weekend work throughout King County and the Pacific Northwest, including extensive travel within Seattle, King County, and Snohomish County.
  • Complete other duties as necessary, assigned by Assistant Dean of Field Education
Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Minimum Education

MSW from an accredited social work program

Minimum seven years post-MSW practice experience

For candidates with clinical social work backgrounds, positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, LICSW

At least three years of experience as a field instructor, supervising MSW or BSW students as interns, volunteers, or in other training capacities

Demonstrated knowledge,and expertise working with historically marginalized and diverse communities

Expertise in anti-racist, anti-oppressive social work practice and working with local community agencies, government programs, or potential/actual practicum or field sites in the Seattle and King County area

Expertise mediating conflicts in work-related settings, particularly between placement staff and students, or others

Expertise with teaching, training, facilitating group discussions or seminars, with both students and peer professionals

WA driver’s license and clean driving record
