Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Facilities Supervisor, the incumbent will work independently or as a team to perform a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance repairs, construction and renovation work on all facilities supporting the education and research mission of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). The incumbent will operate, test, install, and repair systems including HVAC and plumbing; DI/RO water treatment, sea water pumping, and perform electrical maintenance and repair work. Must have the ability to fabricate, machine, weld, and construct part as needed. The incumbent will use a computerized maintenance system to ensure the preventive maintenance program objectives are met. The incumbent will provide safety instructions and directions to unskilled students and faculty on shop equipment and tools related to work on their research projects as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operation of computer controls for the primary pumps and sand filters for the seawater pump life support systems
  • Monitor the aquarium, sea lion tanks, cistern and respond to alarms, adjust and balance flows, operate pumps and valves
  • Coordinate the disassembly and cleaning of the pump house, piping and sand filters
  • Troubleshoot, repair, rebuild and install actuator valves, pumps, motors and couplings
  • Coordinate and document the changeover of seawater intake and discharge lines
  • Perform weekly cleaning of the pump screen
  • Operate and maintain boilers, air handlers, exhaust fans, lighting systems, DI/RO water system, electrical and plumbing
  • Build cabinets, shelves, desktops, add walls and doors for office space as needed
  • Provide support and guidance to researchers and students for the safe and proper use of shop equipment, tools and materials
  • Prepares progress reports, informs Facility Manager of project/task status and deviation from goals/tasks
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to operate construction and related equipment, use considerable judgment and discretion in performing duties: read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications, make rough sketches, estimate cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled facility staff
  • Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations
  • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems
  • May be required to lift up to 80lbs
  • Must be able to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam
Required Qualifications
  • Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations
  • Requires the possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation
License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive Seawater or water distribution systems with experience with pumps and plumbing
  • Proven knowledge of Facility Electrical system: plugs, lighting, breakers, and equipment.
  • Proven knowledge of electrical motors, pumps, lighting and water systems
  • Proven knowledge of fabrication, welding, machine and lathe work. Fabrication skills using shop equipment: table saw. Band saw, drill press, metal shear, lathe, mill, welding mig & tig


Compensation

Classification: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,589/month - $6,000/month
CSU Hiring Range: $5,402/month - $6,904/month
