Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Opportunity

Responsibilities:

The Gallaway lab at Northeastern University is seeking a postdoctoral associate to support research focused on the design and characterization of all-solid-state Li batteries on Northeastern's Boston Campus. Our laboratory values diversity and expects all lab members to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment. The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
  • Synthesize solid-state electrolyte materials and fabricate battery test cells.
  • Design, implement, and analyze repeatable experiments for electrochemical characterization of the cells as well as long-term battery cycling.
  • Plan, execute, and analyze in situ and operando materials characterization experiments on cells and materials, particularly at DOE synchrotron facilities such as NSLS-II and APS. X-ray diffraction and/or spectroscopy experience is a benefit.
  • Provide meticulous documentation, analysis, and summarization of results (including digital/photographic documentation and computational/modeling/analysis as needed)
  • Foster a safe, collaborative environment
  • Develop and write reports, publications, and grants
  • Attend and participate in research meetings/seminars and journal club
  • Participate in career development training workshops/sessions and networking opportunities for research and mentoring
  • Guide and mentor graduate or undergraduate students, including participation in training to improve these skills as needed.

It is expected that the postdoctoral associate will develop and execute a career development plan in coordination with the PI.

About our lab: The overarching goal in our laboratory is to gain mechanistic knowledge about the processes occurring inside batteries by studying them in realistic form factors using in situ and operando techniques. This knowledge is used to better design batteries with high energy density, high safety, or low cost. To achieve this goal, we have developed extensive experience with synchrotron X-ray techniques. One specific effort in our group is designing all-solid-state Li-conducting electrolytes with improved conductivity and good interfacial properties with battery active materials. We work within a supportive team environment with trainees ranging from undergraduate students to postdoctoral associates.

Qualifications:

Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, with experience in electrochemistry; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral and written. Funding is DOD, and US Citizen or US Person status is required.
