Job Summary

The Department of Health Management and Policy (HMP) invites applications from early-stage investigators for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. We seek scholars who have either demonstrated experience or robust training in health economics, econometrics, or the application of quantitative methods in health services or health policy research. Key criteria that will be used by the search committee in identifying suitable candidates includes the following (commensurate with career stage):
  • Teaching experience related to health economics, econometrics, or quantitative methods in health services or health policy research
  • Publication record in these domains
  • Experience in or potential for obtaining extramural research funding
  • History or potential for research collaboration with faculty and students in the department
This is a 9-month, tenure-track, hard money appointment to be made at the Assistant Professor level. Under the current workload policy for tenured and tenure-track faculty, effort is allocated 50% to teaching, 30% to research, and 20% to service. The teaching component includes instruction of 3 courses per year (averaging 1 per quarter during the academic year) and regular advising of students in the department’s academic programs.

The Department of Health Management and Policy aims to improve the health of individuals and populations and reduce health inequities through a focus on institutions, systems, and policies that affect health. Our public health research and teaching examines the roles and impacts of public health policy, the health care system, and governmental public health agencies and their partner organizations at national, state, and local levels. This includes a commitment to addressing racism as a force that underlies health inequities and the importance of antiracist strategies to reduce inequities. The department’s academic programs include an MPH, a PhD in health services research, and a part-time DrPH in health management and policy for working public health professionals. Broadly, our academic programs seek to ground students in management and policy principles that apply to public health practice, public health policy, and health services and systems. This includes the ways that government policies affect the health of communities and the application of management and policy-making skills.

Our faculty is driven by a shared commitment to social justice and brings a mix of career experience in health care, government, community-based programs, and advocacy. Our faculty includes people with backgrounds in public health policy, health services research, economics, medicine, law, epidemiology, sociology, finance, administration, and community health. Taken together, this gives a scientifically rigorous, real-world perspective to our teaching, research, and community service. We enjoy collaborations in research and teaching with colleagues across the Dornsife School of Public Health and Drexel University, as well as with partners in the health care and public health communities in Philadelphia and beyond. In addition, the HMP Department is home to the Center for Population Health and Community Impact, the Center for Public Health Practice, the Center for Hunger Free Communities, and the Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice.

The Dornsife School of Public Health (DSPH) is the top ranked public health program in Philadelphia and is ranked among the top 25 programs nationwide. Founded on the principle of health as a human right, the School focuses on many public health areas but has a special commitment to improving health in cities, eliminating health inequities, and translating evidence into action. DSPH also has a unique commitment to public health practice and experiential learning. Over the past 5 years DSPH has rapidly grown research programs in health equity, and is home to several research programs and centers, further enriched this year with the launch of the Ubuntu Center on Racism, Global Movements, and Population Health Equity.
