Overview

The establishment of an Associate Director of Science Outreach position at Princeton aims to support and deepen the impact of the current slate of outreach programs and partnerships launched by individual academic units. The Associate Director will work across academic units in the natural and physical sciences and mathematics to facilitate the development of new outreach programs and to coordinate efforts to sustain and enhance existing offerings. This work will include building relationships with Princeton faculty, researchers and staff; local and regional schools, non-profit organizations, and other community stakeholders. In addition to serving the public good, these interactions enrich institutional scholarship, foster civic engagement, and extend Princeton University's instructional capacity beyond traditional campus boundaries.


The Associate Director of Science Outreach will encourage and support student, faculty, and researcher participation and create an infrastructure to develop programming efforts that will more broadly affect public engagement and understanding of science. Outreach programs will include, but not be limited to, opportunities to expose, engage and inspire students from under-represented groups to the study of science and mathematics.



Responsibilities
Strategy and Advising:
  • Develops the strategic direction and pathways and resources for engagement in developing innovative programming to support and deepen the impact of the current slate of outreach programs and partnerships launched by individual STEM academic units.
  • Partners with and advises faculty and staff for the short-term and long-term planning and development of effective science outreach programs. Shares information about existing programs such as the Office of Community and Regional Affairs to best leverage campus expertise.
  • Advises on outreach best practices information for community-based, regional and national programming and ensures policies and procedures are aligned with institutional goals and policies.
  • Provides oversight for all program and operational aspects of program development and cultivates program collaborations and joint public events with other departments and peer institutions.
  • Regularly coordinates and serves as the liaison with campus-wide diversity, equity and inclusion and outreach staff, department faculty, and students; identifies opportunities for collaboration and coordination among outreach programs.
  • Collaborates with university stakeholders to understand and establish the foundation for program growth in support of the strategic plan.
Program Development:

  • Develops, implements and evaluates programs and strategies designed to enhance program opportunities and manages the creation of science outreach events.
  • Supports the development and implementation of tools, systems, methods and incentives that encourage science faculty, students and alumni to actively partner in outreach programs that meet community needs.
  • Oversees the planning, coordination, organization, and execution of high-profile events.
  • Develops and directs the promotional marketing of science outreach and engagement with the local community, including the preparation and distribution of marketing, communications and promotional materials to constituents and oversees the planning, coordination, organization and execution of outreach events.
  • Identifies and coordinates efforts to evaluate the impact of outreach initiatives on a regular basis, including conducting reviews to identify strengths and opportunities and make recommendations based on emerging trends and expansion opportunities.
Financial Oversight

  • Oversees and prioritizes resources, spending and budgets in collaboration with STEM departments.
  • Ensures the management of financial activities and resources and ensures they are in compliance with University and department guidelines and policies and serves as final approver for departmental-related expense reports and requisitions.
Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Master's or Professional Degree with 5 or more years of experience developing and administering academic programs at a college or university;

Demonstrated success shepherding and launching major projects, including strategy setting and stakeholder engagement and collaboration;

Passion for serving non-traditional population of students;
Networking, relationship-building, and persuasion skills, characterized by the ability to lead and contribute through ideas and influence rather than exerting hierarchical authority;
Extraordinary listening skills and humility necessary to be an effective ambassador with external groups and institutions as well as key campus partners; and
Advanced degree in liberal arts discipline or other relevant field.

Knowledge and previous experience navigating Princeton's culture is preferred.
