Mission or Goal of Unit: The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University has committed itself to transforming the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division into a model academic unit devoted to excellence in clinical care, teaching, and clinical, translational, and basic research.

The mission of the Massey Cancer Center is to serve as a comprehensive center of excellence in cancer research, prevention and control, patient care, education and health equity. Our guiding principles are to make important discoveries about cancer and to translate these discoveries rapidly into better prevention, detection, treatment and control of cancer to equitably enhance the quality of life of all individuals affected by cancer.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Massey Cancer Center (NCI Designated) and Department of Pediatrics / Pediatric Oncology Division (USNWR Best Cancer Programs) are recruiting an Assistant/Associate Professor level. This position may be considered for tenure eligible or tenured position based on candidates qualifications. The chief purpose of this position is to support our mission to conduct meaningful research in pediatric oncology (i.e., Leukemia/ Lymphoma, Sarcomas, Brain Tumors, Developmental Therapeutics or other area of relevance) and will be built on strengths and priorities of the School of Medicine, the Massey Cancer Center, and the Department of Pediatrics.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching: Assist in the mentoring of pre- and post-doctoral students and coordinate with the department’s educational mission of training medical students. The translational researcher will help mentor existing faculty with future grant support and publications.

Research:
Contribute to VCU’s national reputation through research and scholarship (extramural funding, high quality publications, citations, and national recognition as through honorific awards and committee leadership) and maintain active involvement in appropriate national or international organizations and bodies. Publish in peer-reviewed journals and submit grant applications for extramural funding in the field of Pediatric Oncology.

Service:
Serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD or MD/PhD in the field of pediatrics (e.g. brain tumors, sarcoma, or leukemia)
  • Assistant or Associate Professor; Academic appointment with tenure, or tenure-track based on candidates qualifications
  • The Associate Professor level applicants should have outstanding publication records and extra-mural support
  • The Assistant Professor level position requires a strong publication record and post-doctoral experience with the potential for, or evidence of, the ability to secure funding
  • Extensive cancer relevant research experience
  • A distinguished record of scientific achievement evidenced by both publications and a strong track record of extramural peer-reviewed research funding
  • Proven trainee and faculty mentorship skills
  • Experience in, and coordination of, collaborative grants and managing trans-disciplinary research
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
