Purpose of Position

The Department of Computer Science (www.nku.edu/csc) is searching for two motivated and excited computer scientists to join our faculty at a rank commensurate to the candidate’s qualifications. One position is will primarily contribute to our Computer Science and Data Science bachelor’s degree programs. The other position will primarily contribute to our newly created Applied Software Engineering bachelor’s degree program. Both positions will potentially contribute to other programs (i.e., Cybersecurity, and Information Technology). The positions will start in August 2022. The positions can be at the rank of a tenure-track Assistant Professor or renewable Professor of Practice.

In addition, the department is committed to supporting conferences for women in computing, participation in CRA’s Data Buddies program to evaluate students’ sense of belonging and support, as well as offering student groups focused on Cybersecurity, Robotics, and ICPC Competitions.

About the Department
The Department of Computer Science is part of the College of Informatics (http://informatics.nku.edu), which unites the departments of Computer Science, Business Informatics, and Communication to embrace the modern concept of information in all its aspects. The College moved into its $52 million-dollar building named Griffin Hall in August 2011. The Computer Science department offers five undergraduate majors (Applied Software Engineering, Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Data Science), and a new online graduate degree program (MSc. in Cybersecurity). The department has approximately 750 undergraduate students majoring in those areas. There are currently 25 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members, 1 Professor of Practice, and 4 full-time lecturers in the department. Primary Responsibilities

Northern Kentucky University values quality teaching above all. Tenure-track faculty members are expected to teach 3 classes per semester. In addition, tenure-track faculty members are expected to be active scholars. The incorporation of students into research is especially valued. Professor of Practice faculty members are expected to teach 4 classes per semester. However, there are no research requirements. All faculty members are expected to provide service to the department, university, or the community.

All candidates must commit to promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications

Applicants for an Assistant Professor position must have a Ph.D. degree (or ABD with an expected completion date before September 2022) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field. Applicants for the Professor of Practice must have a Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field plus a minimum of 5 years of industry experience.

Candidates with expertise in Data Science/Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning or Software Engineering/DevOps are preferred. However, candidates with expertise in other areas of computer science are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates who apply for the tenure-track position must also submit a statement of research philosophy including plans for how to incorporate students in research. Applicants for the Professor of Practice position must submit a document in which they describe or showcase their experience or portfolio.
