Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management (AVPEM) is a senior management position and serves as the chief enrollment officer for SJSU. The AVPM leads the campus efforts to identify, recruit, enroll, retain and graduate a diverse student body in alignment with the campus mission, multi-year strategic enrollment management plan, enrollment targets, forecasted enrollment trends, and fiscal requirements. The AVPEM works closely with the VP for Student Affairs and members of the President’s Cabinet as well as Deans, Associate Deans, Associate Vice Presidents, and other campus leaders to develop short and long term plans and meet strategic enrollment objectives as well as ensure a coordinated campus culture focused on student success and eliminating equity gaps.

The AVPEM is responsible for the leadership, management, planning, administration, direction and evaluation of the Enrollment Management unit which serves prospective students, applicants, enrolled students, family members, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners. This position has delegated authority and responsibility to manage the university’s key student enrollment functions through program management, strategic planning, and supervision of departments including Undergraduate Admissions & Outreach; Enrollment Management Technical Implementation & Communications; Financial Aid & Scholarship Office; Office of the Registrar; Testing Office; and Office of the AVP. The incumbent directly supervises management level directors, administrative analysts and administrative support staff and indirectly oversees a combined unit with approximately 120 employees and an operating budget of $8M comprised of multiple funding sources. The AVPEM ensures a student-centered approach within Enrollment Management with an emphasis on customer service, student success, equity and excellence. The AVPEM represents the university and division on internal and external committees and serves on divisional management teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leads enrollment planning efforts by working closely with the Vice President, the President’s Cabinet, Deans, Associate Deans, Associate VPs, colleagues across the university and community partners to develop, implement and modify a multi-year strategic enrollment management plan with associated strategies to achieve the university’s qualitative and quantitative enrollment goals and objectives at the campus, college, department and program level
  • Evaluates effectiveness of the multi-year strategic enrollment management plan continuously and modifies as needed
  • Formulates metrics, policies and procedures for establishing and achieving objectives in student recruitment, admissions, marketing, communications, registration, financial aid, testing, retention and graduation
  • Collects and leverages data and analytics to inform enrollment management decision making in strategy and all aspects of operations
  • Leads efforts to educate the campus about strategic enrollment management, current trends and forecasting related to meeting enrollment goals and objectives
  • Segments out current and new markets for recruitment, marketing, communication, yield and enrollment
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates the management team within Enrollment Management that includes the Director of Financial Aid & Scholarship Office; Director of Enrollment Management Technical Implementation & Communication; University Registrar; Director of Undergraduate Admissions & Outreach; and Testing Administrator as well as one Confidential staff member and one administrative analyst.
  • Leads the Enrollment Management unit comprised of approximately 120 managers, coordinators, analysts and administrative staff who serve regular academic session, special session and open university students
  • Manages the Enrollment Management budget of approximately $8M which includes CSU Operating Fund, trust accounts and recovery accounts. Submit requests for new funding, forecast mid-year and end of year balances and monitor expenditures in collaboration with management team

  • Fiscal administration skills including overseeing budgets in excess of $1M, developing budget proposals and reconciling expenditure reports
  • Skilled in developing and carrying out assessment of strategic goals
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues at all levels within the organization
  • Knowledge in making data-informed decisions
  • Ability to research and analyze complex information
  • Skilled in developing policies/procedures as well as applying state and federal policies and procedures
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in higher education administration, student affairs, educational leadership, educational counseling, public administration or related field
  • A minimum of ten years of experience with at least five years serving at the director level or above in a college of university setting
  • Experience in at least one area of enrollment management
  • A background of progressively increasing leadership responsibility as a director in a functional area within Student Affairs; Fiscal oversight of at least a $1M budget; Demonstrated experience working in a racially diverse setting;
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in higher education administration, student affairs, educational leadership, educational counseling, public administration or related field
  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in academic and/or student affairs administration or related fields in a college/university setting, including responsibility for planning, policy, program development and program implementation at the director level or higher
  • Experience in one of the functional areas within Enrollment Management
  • Experience working with underrepresented students and maximizing access to higher education
  • Experience in developing and accessing a comprehensive enrollment plan as well as identifying new enrollment markets for growth
  • Experience collaborating with partners across the university to achieve common goals


Compensation

Classification: Administrator IV
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
