POSITION DESCRIPTION
AUIS invites applications for an open-specialty, open-rank position on the full-time English Faculty, with faculty rank potentially including Professor of Practice. Interest in visiting positions is welcome. The successful applicant will report directly to the department chair of the English Department. Teaching duties will include regular classes in our Core Composition sequence (Argument, Critical Reading and Writing, Research) as well as contributing courses to our English-Literature, English Translation, or English-Journalism majors. All the department’s courses allow faculty considerable flexibility in course design and selection of readings. The primary responsibility of a faculty member is teaching and supporting student learning both inside and outside the classroom. Thus, faculty members are expected to keep current in their fields, to create syllabi for their courses that represent the current state of knowledge, to select textbooks and course materials that are appropriate to the level of the course, to use instructional methods and technologies that will engage students, to challenge students intellectually, to assess and support student progress during the course both in class and though individual appointments as may be required, and to evaluate student performance fairly and accurately at the conclusion of a course.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate exhibits the following characteristics:
- Graduate degree from an accredited college or university in English literature, Translation, Rhetoric/Composition, Journalism or a related field.
- Doctorate preferred, but excellent masters-holders may be considered for hiring at the Lecturer rank.
- Candidate with a focus on Translation should have a demonstrated ability to translate between English, Arabic, and at least one dialect of Kurdish: our translation courses require instructors with ability to teach both Arabic and Kurdish speakers.
- Native or near native fluency in spoken and written English.
- Prior teaching experience, especially in liberal arts core composition courses.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching.
- Evidence of outstanding teaching skills, including the ability to teach diverse populations and students for whom English is not a native language.
- Extra specialization in literature, journalism, translation or gender studies.
THE DEPARTMENT
The English and Translation Department offers three degrees: a B.A. in English, a B.A in Journalism, and a B.A. in Translation. A minor in Gender Studies is also offered. All undergraduate students at AUIS are required to take Core Curriculum courses in English as part of the requirement for their degrees.
COMPENSATION
The compensation package is competitive and includes base salary, subsidized housing, annual airfare, subsidized health insurance, a generous holiday and leave policy, opportunities for consulting, and other elements.
