Job Summary

The Academic Advisor-Athletics assists in the development and coordination of academic assistance programs designed to enable student-athletes to receive appropriate and timely academic assistance.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Understanding of NCAA bylaw 14 or ability to understand NCAA bylaw 14.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required.
  • Computer literacy, particularly in word processing and database management are required.
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
  • Demonstrated and success experience academic advising and/or academic support in education.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
Essential Job Functions
  • Provides direct assistance to student-athletes by utilizing a knowledge of academic policies and procedures unique to Alcorn State University to assist student-athletes in the development of academic schedules appropriate for their stated educational goals, providing guidance to student-athletes in decision-making and learning how to accept responsibility for their decisions, and assisting student-athletes in the selection of academic majors.
  • Monitors and helps to ensure that all student athletes are maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degree and assists with monitoring of academic eligibility to compete in athletic events.
  • Ensures that student athletes are informed of the programs and services available within the campus community that will assist them to be academically successful.
  • Promotes a positive image of the University and contributes to the recruiting effort directed towards student-athletes by visiting with prospective student-athletes and their parents, providing information regarding the University, and associated academic programs, and answering questions posed by student-athletes or referring them to an appropriate authority or resource for the requested information.
  • Assists faculty in resolving academic or related problems with student-athletes and enforces attendance policies established by academic departments by monitoring each student-athlete’s academic progress during the semester, contacting, and assisting student-athletes who have been reported by faculty for excessive absences, providing follow-up information regarding excessive absences to faculty, and informing coaches of student-athletes’ academic performance.
  • Abides by and complies with National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ) and Southwestern Athletic Conference and Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning ( IHL ) rules, academic standards, requirements, and policies of the University, and all guidelines and policies of the Athletics department and reports any concerns of compromise or violation of rules, standards, guidelines or policies to the Director of Athletics or the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Academics.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Academics.
  • Contributes to the overall success of Intercollegiate Athletics by performing all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required preferably in Guidance and Counseling, Athletic Administration, or a related field. Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as an academic counselor/advisor for student athletes and or academic support in higher education.
