Position Responsibilities:

The College of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, has a postdoctoral position available. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop and expand upon a diversified technical skill set while making a positive contribution to the team members’ laboratories. The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in projects related to Nuclear Materials, Accident Tolerant Fuel Claddings, Coating Technology, and Materials Aging and Degradation. The candidate should have experience operating advanced surface characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with a vast network of scientists and engineers and be responsible for some day-to-day activities required in the laboratories to advance on current federal grants. Specifically, duties include:

• Quote and order new equipment and supplies for the lab and maintain inventory to ensure that research experiments are done efficiently.

• Assist the Principal Investigators (PIs) in conducting new research projects.

• Consistently design and conduct experiments independently, leading to the generation of high-quality data for manuscripts.

• Assist the PI with the editing and preparation of manuscripts and research proposals.

• Prepare oral and poster presentations for professional conferences.

• Train junior laboratory personnel in basic laboratory protocols.

• Perform monitoring and preventive maintenance of lab equipment.

• Compile results of experiments and weekly report to supervisor.

• Carry out other research-related duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Nuclear Engineering.

- Experience in Advanced Materials Characterization

- Experience non-destructive examination and mechanical testing.

- Ability to mentor junior team members and ensure the highest levels of laboratory safety

- Excellent communication skills

- Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams

-Ability to work under tight deadlines and short turnaround times




Position Details:

Salary Range: $47,500 to $55,000/year (commensurate with experience)

Grant also states that "each recipient of funds under this award must be lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of the grant application and for the duration of the grant period, as evidenced by Permanent Resident Form I-551 (Green Card) or must present other evidence from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that employment will not affect his/her immigration status."
