Portland Community College is pleased to announce the recruitment of the Director of Student Belonging and Wellbeing - Veterans Services position in the new Division of Student Belonging and Wellbeing. This position was created as a result of an all-college reorganization and the successful candidate will have the ability to create and impact change within the College and the Division.




The Director of Veterans Services will report to the Dean of Student Belonging and Wellbeing, and will serve as a member of the Dean’s leadership team as well as the Vice President of Student Affairs’ Council of Student Affairs Leadership Team (C-SALT). The Director is responsible for the oversight and development of the college’s Veterans Resource Centers and will manage all professional and student staff members working in those areas. In addition, one of the initial responsibilities for this position will be to evaluate and determine structural, organizational and operational enhancements, and opportunities with the Veterans Educational Benefits Office.




Other primary responsibilities include implementing future state programming goals developed by Center Teams, leading the creation of a student-centered, hybrid service and operational model and defining partnership opportunities with stakeholders across the College and community, including the Office of Equity & Inclusion, the division of Student Life & Engagement, Student Services and external organizations such as Veterans Affairs. Another integral aspect of this role will be deep collaboration, shared goal setting and intersectional work with other current and incoming Directors who oversee Counseling Services, Multicultural Services, Women’s Resource Centers | Outreach and Advocacy Project, and Queer Resource Centers | Community Resource Navigation and Connection.

  • Experience working with the diverse, intersectional, and complex Veteran community within the context of higher education and has an ability to help students navigate systems and understand their own intersectionality; shows a commitment to engage the college community in Veteran-focused culturally responsive practices, processes and strategies.
  • Demonstrates awareness of one’s own cultural background and privilege, along with military culture, and how it influences perceptions, values, and practices and engages in the way they shape their relationship to students and staff. Ability to disrupt prejudice, discrimination, and racism that impacts students and staff at the interpersonal, intergroup, and institutional levels.
  • Experience applying a collaborative leadership approach to supervision, decision making and long-term strategic operations, sustainability and development of programs that serve intersectional Veteran communities from historically marginalized identities.
  • Experience building strong connections, partnerships and collaboration between Academic and Student Affairs divisions, departments, community organizations, federal and state agencies (i.e. Veterans Affairs) and key internal and external stakeholders to advance division and institutional goals.
  • Ability to create, foster, and empower an effective team focused on equitable student success and retention; ability to engage their teams and the institution toward a more student-centered, culturally responsive and trauma informed model that supports the belonging and wellbeing of student Veterans and Veteran affiliated students.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying for grants/grant writing and budget management, and a facility for using data and assessment outcomes for decision-making, planning, implementing and taking continuous improvement actions for operations, programming, procedures and services.
  • Exhibits a holistic knowledge of Veterans Affairs programs and policies, Veterans Benefits, and the Veterans Affairs education system, including experience navigating through compliance and benefits issues, staying abreast of changes, and communicating changes and compliance information to students and college stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

Master’s Degree in Education, Student Affairs/Services, Management, Social Science, or other related field.
AND Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience working in higher education student activities providing program/project management or coordination, to include two (2) years management-level supervision of employees (hiring, assessment, discipline, etc).

OR Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Student Affairs/Services, Management, Social Science, or a related field
AND five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience working in higher education student activities providing program/project management or coordination, to include two (2) years management-level supervision of employees (hiring, assessment, discipline, etc).

OR Bachelor’s Degree in any field
AND seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience working in higher education student activities providing program/project management or coordination, to include two (2) management-level supervision of employees (hiring, assessment, discipline, etc)..

OR nine (9) years of progressively responsible professional experience working in higher education student activities providing program/project management or coordination, to include two (2) years management-level supervision of employees (hiring, assessment, discipline, etc).

Position Grade J Starting Salary Expectations Minimum $65,713 to range midpoint of $80,496. Placement will generally not exceed the mid-point, based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. Position Grade Salary Range $65713 to $95282 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

PCC currently fully funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. After one year of management or confidential service, PCC also provides a 2% contribution to a 403(b) account for eligible management and confidential personnel. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for you, your spouse/domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age, as well as partial tuition reimbursement for full-time employees at other accredited institutions.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Work environment includes frequent disruptions and changes in priorities. Work is generally performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. Working hours may vary and some evening or weekend work is required. This position requires occasional lifting of office supplies, training materials and computer equipment. Frequent travel between campuses is required, along with occasional out of district travel.
